Mystery Slot In Quadra 605

Hi, all,

I picked up a Quadra 605 recently, and noticed an empty extra slot on the motherboard I don't recognize (see attached photo). It's in-between the VRAM and RAM, but doesn't appear to fit either type. I have a copy of the repair guide, along with reference photos of other 605s, and none include this extra slot. Anyone have any idea what this is supposed to be used for?

Thanks,
M

The name of the thing is often silk-screen'd onto the motherboard.
Is there anything nearby on yours?
The Quadra 605 is the same motherboard as the LC475 (but with a different Gestalt-ID) and it has a ROM SIMM there.

While early Q605, LC475, and P475/P476 boards had a ROM SIMM, what do the later revision version boards look like for the ROM? Are they soldered on the board? Can we compare it with pictures?

They all have the same soldered ROM, only Apple tends to include an additional ROM SIMM slot, "just in case" they needed to issue a ROM update, on early machines of a type.

Hmmm. And the later version boards lacked that 64-pin SIMM socket.

Okay. Has there been any talk about looking into this further?
