My growing 180 collection...

Really just want one working 180, guess that's too hard to ask though. so I've got to make my own!

DO have some questions now that I've got a pair of them

first how hard is it to change the screen assemblies? one machine has a near mint case (even the mouse buttons and palm rests still have all their texture!) but that one has a bad screen (dark circle that is there even when the machine is off) The other machine has a rougher case, with broken internal screw mounts, wear spots ect but has a perfect screen...

Both 180s boot off the floppy fine, but were stripped of any extra RAM, HDDs etc :(

Here is a useful link on replacing the PB 180 screen. This is one of the easiest PB surgeries, so take heart. The trickiest part is getting the thin ribbon connector to let go of the ribbon, and getting the ribbon properly latched in the new screen. Take a few minutes to figure out how the latch on the connector works. When you figure out what to slide and in what direction, the connector is easy to use.

Good luck.

well that was wierd... week of sitting on my workbench the screen fixed itself... maybe is was weeks of sitting in the POs garage in sub zero temps that made it wacky...

still swapped screens as the other one is still a bit better (brighter backlight, smoother controls) also just swapped the entire top end as it turns out one had a better upper mouse button and no crack in the modem area...

Discovered another anomaly though. one PB needs the battery and power supply to function, while the other will run off the battery, power supply or both. However that one doesn't fully shut off either. if you do 'shut down' it shuts down but the screen goes to white... and also will shut off (and go to white) if I push down on the right side palm rest. hoping that's just the SCSI cable sitting loose?

in any case I've got two mostly working 180s and a working OE Apple battery(and a battery conditioner/charger too)! sweet going to keep one around as a parts machine. now I just need to get RAM, hopefully a SCSI to CF converter, maybe a video out dongle and a case to hold it all in. (already own an Asanté mini EN/SC)

someone could have re-wired some of the power circuits to keep things staying on when other circuits fail. easier than troubleshooting, although makes things quirky. I used to do this crap all the time. Its a thought at least. ....
