Macintosh SE - SE/30 Internal Case Differences

Trash: The PSUs are identical, save for a different color switch and plug (they're black on the SE versus platinum on the SE/30 (and perhaps late-model SEs?).

I think the inner chassis is pretty much identical except the placement of some of the cutouts is slightly different (the SE's power cutout, for instance, seems to be shifted forward slightly). Also, the expansion slot port bracket thing (the thing that lines up with the hole in back which holds ports for an expansion card) is riveted in on most SEs that I've seen, as opposed to screwed in on the SE/30.

The shape of the bracket which holds the expansion slot may be somewhat different as well, but I've never observed them that closely.

Here's some photos of my conversion of a dual 800k SE to an SE/30 I did a couple years ago.

More here

In this case, there was no cutout for the SE/30 PDS slot, which wouldn't matter if you didn't have any expansion cards. The power connector cutout was also too far forward. I hacked up holes for both when getting it to work.

NIGHT STALKER
That's strange, did they standardize on the vertical slot opening for the SE after the release of the SE/30?

DC&DftMF3e has the horizontal SE Card diagram also showing the vertical mounting flange of the SE/30. The Radius Magic Bus card and Radius16's PDS were both designed for vertical VidCards mounted to that flange.

Apple changed the design before the SE/30 was released. If you knew that you were going to sell an upgrade that wouldn't fit, wouldn't you try to get the change into the production process as quickly as possible? Uniserver's photos show a pre-FDHD SE which had a brief overlap with the SE/30.

The SE that I have in the picture, that was a dual 800k drive SE, I'v since added the rom's / swim, and Two Super Drives.

looks like I need to open up my other se's

Use a serial number decoder and work out which SE is oldest. At least six months older than the first SE/30.

Well I guess my SE a slightly newer then what I thought.

Manufactured in: F => Fremont, California, USA

Year of production: 1988

Week of production: 34

Production number: 01X => 65

Modell ID: M5010 => Macintosh SE(shipped with 2 floppy drives)

Your Macintosh SE(shipped with 2 floppy drives) was the 65th Mac manufactured during the 34th week of 1988 in Fremont, California, USA.

Here I will check my FDHD: it says 1988 right on the label.

well this makes no sense:

Manufactured in: F => Fremont, California, USA

Year of production: 1981

Week of production: 1

Production number: 52M => 5869

Modell ID: NB03 => unknown Mac

Your unknown Mac was the 5869th Mac manufactured during the 1st week of 1981 in Fremont, California, USA.

I figured Radius had a part in getting that vertical slot into the spec if it hadn't been there, heck, Aldus probably got on them to allow for more expansion. ::)

I'm wondering what the earlier editions of Designing Cards and Drivers show in the SE diagrams. The third edition is too new for some of my purposes, a lot is assumed, the information having been released in the earlier editions.

Yeah, Apple changed the serial number coding on the 1990-91 Macs. Throws the serial decoder for a loop. Checked mine as well, and it did the same thing. Emailed the guy who runs the site, and he menitoned that.

NIGHT STALKER
I couldn't find it last night, but I remembered the Radius Magic Bus card turning their proprietary interconnect perpendicular to the SE PDS and shifting it to the slot at the back of the case. It was the expansion slot bracket that held it in place. It came with the FPD card and I never needed it because it takes the place of the Radius16/25 in an unaccelerated SE.

My bad, haven't played with that setup since the deal for a Radius FPD went bad over ten years ago. Got a crazy shipping & handling quote from a seller within easy driving distance. He wouldn't allow a local pickup, lesson learned, I'm glad eBay closed that shipping fee loophole.
