Help Networking SE's with localtalk - System 6.0.8

Hi, I am new to networking compact Macs with localtalk. I have installed network software installer 1.4.4 and MacTCP 2.0.6 on both an SE and SE/30.

I've connected a printer cable between both printer ports. I was able to configure addresses but for some reason, there is no AppleTalk icon in the chooser of either computer? AppleTalk is active on both.

The SE30 has a bluescsi but the SE still has a HDD that refuses to die so I'm just trying to get software over to it. I've tried two different cables so I know that's not the problem and both work on other devices. Hopefully something obvious I'm missing.

The serial ports on both are working fine as I've verified them with midi devices and snooper in the past.

What are you trying to accomplish here? Answers vary depending on what you're trying to do.

I assume you're trying to share files between the two compact Macs...

Ignore MacTCP, it's not necessary for LocalTalk... also you have it set up incorrectly anyways. The GUI is not as straightforward as it seems! It assumes IP networks are still set up like they were in 1990...

Not quite sure what you mean. I assume you're talking about the "AppleShare icon".

It looks like you're missing the AppleShare client software... it's an optional install on System 6 I think.


You will also need an AppleShare server of some sort. System 7 has file sharing built in, I'd install that on the SE/30 instead of sys6.

yes, thanks. As stated earlier, just trying to get files over to the SE .. which has a spinning disk drive... and you are absolutely correct that I have no idea what I'm doing...YET!

I was going to type out a little writeup, but I found that... This site already did a decent one that covers exactly what you want to do!

In your case, your SE/30 would be used in place of the Mac Classic in the guide.

Also note this part of the guide:

In my case, my System 6 disks didn’t have AppleTalk so I had to download it separately. I found a copy here.

MacGUI is known to play games with their downloads, sometimes requiring you to make an account, or sometimes just pulling all their files down when they feel sad.

I'd recommend just going to MacintoshGarden and looking for "AppleShare Workstation 3.5" and installing that on the SE.




also i'd advise removing MacTCP from your system folders, it's not really necessary unless you're using Ethernet or if you're messing around with MacIP... which you're not

where you seeing that? 3.5 should work fine on 6. I've used it on 6.0.7 before.

One machine needs to either run System 7 OR System 6 File Server (which will turn it into a dedicated server only) to share files between the two. It doesn’t matter what version of AppleTalk/AppleShare you have.

you're probably right. I think I was trying 3.5.6 and it told me it required 7.0, and later.
