Macintosh Portable OS Reinstall?

Sorry about the potentially silly question: if I were to grab System 6 or System 7 from Apple's download site, could I use those disks to perform a clean install of Mac OS on my Portable? I got the computer used, and while the system doesn't seem to be messy I'd prefer a clean start. Would the clean install also give me the battery and Mac Portable control panel items? Or would I have to hunt down a set of original Mac Portable floppy disks for that?

The System 6 Installer should give you the option to install system Software for Macintosh Portable which will include the battery Desk Accessory and "sleep" option.

Very cool, thanks! What about system 7? 7.5.5 in particular? I even have the disks for this version.

I would strongly advise against System 7.5.x on any 68000 unless you have applications that explicitly require it. Most enthusiasts would say that the best OS for a 68000 is 7.1 but if you don't have a copy, System 7.0.x with Tune-up is usually good enough. Whatever you decide, have a look at Gamba's pages on downsizing System 7.5 and/or useful ad-ons: http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/index.html
