I bought this machine and all the trimmings from it's only owner, my Aunt.  She didn't use it much.  At some point, my cousin expanded the memory to 4MB.  I haven't powered it up yet.

I'm an avid 6502 programmer and have done some 8080, Z-80, VAX and 80x86 assembler, written a Forth interpreter, and programmed in several high level languages, for about 40 years.  But this is my first hands-on experience with a 68000 (or any Apple product).

I want to play with Macanooga ChooChoo and a Forth environment.  I believe there was some object-oriented Forth system for Mac (MOPS?).  I want to run an emulator on my laptop (Linux) so I don't have to beat up my vintage hardware very often.  Where are some good places to start?

Thanks,

Charlie

seb serial number.jpg

By convention, I name my nodes after words from the menu at the Indian restaurant (mattar, tarabuza, naan, paneer, daal, ghobi, etc...).  I have decided to name this machine 'seb' which is (as near as I can tell) the Hindi word for apple.  I fired Seb up last night and it promptly ate the system utilities disk!

No amount of [shut down], [Eject] or powering the machine off and poking the unfolded paper clip into the tiny hole would remove it.  I couldn't open the case because I don't have one of those 6-point screwdrivers and didn't want to chance it with an allen wrench.  The good news is that everything else worked okay.  The video was clear, the mouse was smooth, the keyboard worked, I could look around with the Finder, etc...

It might be fun to pack everything up and take it to the Genius Bar at one of the local Apple stores, but I'm not counting on them for help.  I'll probably go to MicroCenter and get a 6-point screwdriver and do surgery myself, and thoroughly clean out all the dust bunnies inside the case and inspect and photograph Seb's interior.

The serial decoder thingy had this to say:

The tool required is Torx 15, but should be long enough to reach the screws under the handle, so take the longer you can.

Another screw is hidden by the battery cover.

The floppy drive is probably stuck by old grease, most of them are.

Welcome, fellow Northern Virginian!

Micro Center definitely carries the necessary bit, just make sure you have a narrow extender (since many screwdriver shafts are a bit too wide) and you'll be set to crack the case open.  Home Depot used to carry a long T15 screwdriver, though I don't know if they still do.  My experience has been the Tysons Genius Bar seemed to be a bit more knowledgeable about older things, at least compared to Fair Oaks, Clarendon, or Pentagon City.
