Macintosh Plus 1mb - Using files from the SCSI device?

Hiya Folks. thought it was just easier to make a new post since the issue is different..

At the moment i've gotten my Macintosh plus to boot on system 5.1. using the image on https://www.savagetaylor.com/downloads/downloads-macintosh/#3_contents_of_my_images

However i can't seem to do anything with it... I tried loading the image using Basilisk II however it's not possible to load anything underneath 7.0... This wouldn't be an issue but my macintosh plus cannot use 7.0.. And i can't seem to figure out if it's possible to add files onto the SCSI that the macintosh can load.. Am i SOL?

You could use Mini vMac instead of Basilisk II - Mini vMac emulates a Plus specifically.

However, the Plus is supported up to Mac OS 7.5.5, so you should be able to use a newer OS (although I'd argue that 6.0.8 and earlier is the sweet spot for the Plus - later OSes make it feel a lot slower)

Sooo i did get an image working for Vmac that is 6.0.8 which i'm happy with. However none of the images i can find come with a way to mount disks on the desktop.. So even if i trasnfer over the DSK files to the 6.0.8 desktop. i can't use them on real hardware since the 6.0.8 image can't mount them.

Yeah, this is unfortunately one of the great frustrations of working with vintage Macs - unless you have another newer vintage Mac, getting files to and from them is a bit of a chore - especially with machines like the Plus, which can't even exchange floppy disks with non-Macs.

The most straightforward solution is probably the FloppyEmu (https://www.bigmessowires.com/floppy-emu/) - load an SD card up with disk images, plug it into your Mac, and you can mount any of them like a floppy disk.

With System 7 and later, the Disk Copy application will let you mount disk images inside Mac OS, but on System 6 things are tricker. Programs like MountImage do more or less the same thing but are fussier about image file formats.

So issue is your images don't work on mini vmac. or at least the one i downloaded does not. I downloaded quite a few of them but they all come up with the dreaded X mac icon when trying to load.

Perhaps i did somethign wrong though but i've read over your guide a few times >.< i'll try again though

I think we're missing a bit of information. From your posts you appear to have:

1. A physical Mac Plus with at least 1 floppy disk (but how many Floppy disks do you actually have?)
2. A mechanism for copying disk images from a website to 800k floppy disks (you've copied System 5.1).
3. A means of running a Mac Plus emulator (miniVMac) with disk images.
4. Maybe a SCSI drive.

With this you can sort out all your problems. If you can copy FD images to real FDs then you can surely copy HD SC Setup and then format the SCSI HD? You can fit a minimal System 5.1 and HD SC Setup on a single 800K FD. You can copy a MacBinary program to an FD. After a while, copying via an FD will get tedious, so serial transfer, although slower may be more convenient. this means you can copy Mac Terminal which would enable you to do simple file transfer, or maybe there's another simple file transfer program you can use and Macintosh Garden should point you to some. 800k disks are variable speed, unlike PC disks so how are you able to copy from an image to a real FD?

I'm running the REAL hardware off of a sillytinySCSI that i bought from ZigZag. With a 5.1 image from Reality’s website since I don’t own any Macintosh floppies.

I have a means of emulating 6.0.8 on mini vmac however none of the images that Realitystorm has on his websites work. with mini Vmac. i'm using a random one i found on internet archive.

I can USE Realitystorm's images on my real macintosh. but i can't add any files because His image doesn't work on Vmac. and his 7.5.5 image while working on Basilisk II. doesn't work on my macintosh due to ram.

For the 6.0.8 image that i have working on Vmac (From Internet archive) i can't mount disk images because Control Panel in the actual 6.0.8 operating system doesn't have MountImage

I think I know what the problem is. I have two types of images on my site: volume images and drive images.

• sillyTinySCSI I believe only works with drive images.
• MiniVmac only works with works with volume images
• Basilisk II works with both volume images AND drive images.
• my download page describes the difference between the two.

I typically use Basilisk II to edit my drive images. For the drive images with 6.0.8 on them, you can edit those with Basilisk II.

1. Use my 7.5.5 drive image as the first drive under Basilisk II (boot drive)
2. Use my 5.1 drive image as the second drive under Basilisk II
3. Add any files you want to the second 5.1 drive image using Basilisk II.
4. Copy the 5.1 drive image to your sillyTinySCSI SD card.

I have info on how to setup Basilisk II and copy files on to my image files using it:

Originally when I made the page the main solution was SCSI2SD, the new options are far easier to use and I need to redo my image files to support their tools that let you load .img and .sit files directly off the SD card, e.g. MacSD commander, BlueSCSI Toolbox, not sure if ZuluSCSI has the same type of tools.

I apologize then. I came off as a bit of a dickhead. I ended up Using your image on Basilisk II and copied it over to the 5.1 image. DSK images still can't be mounted so i ended up opening them in 7.5.5 and copying the contents of the actual image over to the 5.1 image which seems to work properly on my macintosh..

Even though it was a bit messy at first i'm happy to finally be able to use the macintosh now haha. Just gotta load it up with an obscene amount of games now.
