Mac LC SuperDrive Won't Recognize 1.44MB Floppy Disks

I have a Macintosh LC running System 7.0. When I insert a 1.44MB floppy into its SuperDrive, it prompts me to format the disk, but gives me the options of "One-Sided" or "Two-Sided" as though I had inserted an older-style disk without the HD notch. It behaves as though the machine has an older 800K drive, but it is a SuperDrive.

Now, the little spring-loaded plastic pin that detects the HD floppy notch is present, of course, but I have noticed that, when I turn the drive upside-down, the little pin extends a few millimeters (due to gravity), where the other detection pins don't (they would already seem to be fully-extended). When I turn it right-side-up, the pin falls back down a bit. Is it possible the spring-load mechanism is stuck in the 800K/400K position, and, more importantly, is there a way I can fix this?

Or is it perhaps something else? Any ideas?

Thanks.
