Lost icons for applications on OS7.5.3

Hi,

I made a clone of my MacOS7.1 harddisk installation to a SCSI2SD-drive (using my OS9.2.2 G4) and after that I upgraded my ColorClassic to MacOS7.5.3 with the disks from the internet. Now I have lost the icons for my all applications. They all appear with TextEdit icons... Is it possible to get the icons back?

Also: how can I change the associations between files and applications, e.g. for .aiff files when doubleclicking on them in MacOS7.5.3?

Thanks.

Hi razo,

You need to rebuild your desktop - hold down command + option keys at startup, keep both keys held down until you reach the desktop and you are asked if you want to rebuild the desktop file - this takes a moment to do.

As for associations: Mac OS is ignorant of file extensions. What matters is creator type (the application it belongs to) and file type of a file; each are four character codes. You can use ResEdit to reassociate files as a result.

Thanks, that solved the icons!

For the file associations: if I change the creator type with ResEdit, will I then get special small icons for the .aif files in Finder or will they still be white?

(Edit: on my SE/30 the creator types for .aif files seems to be in order but the icons are still white, so I guess the answer is given..)

I just remembered I could also drag them onto the Application to open them with the application I want, so I might not need to learn ResEdit.

I have made 2Gb partitions on the SCSI2SD drives and notice another problem on my other classic mac, the SE/30 running OS7.1: in a folder with about 700 .aif files (about 1Gb total size) the scroll bars seem to have disappeared.. But then they appear after a while, so I guess it just needs some time to count all the files.... I guess the only solution is to have fewer files in the folders..

"Creator" and "Type" are two separate attributes. Creator is the application that will open the file. Type is the file's type within that application, such as for a word-processing application that can save both text documents and stationary documents.

After you change the type and creator codes with ResEdit, icons will still remain generic unless you have a matching application for the file's Creator.* For example, if you put a bunch of MacWrite documents on your disk, but don't have the MacWrite application, then those icons will be generic document icons.

* There are some exceptions to this, which maybe someone else can explain if there's interest...

The Macintosh Creator/Type system (instead of CP/M file extensions) and concept of forked files actually works really well within the Macintosh world; it only breaks down when you're transferring files to and from non-Macintosh systems...
