Less Spam?

Ok, now i'm probably not the best person to say this, but the IRC channel has become a bit too....spammy and annoying.

i realize that i am a big part of the problem, i almost never have anything valid to add to the conversation but i'm also certainly not the only one.

i think we need to just cut back, take it easy, and have less dumbassity in IRC.

I'll be doing my part by taking a break, not going to the channel for like a few days or smth.

oh, and i know there is another thread. a mod can like merge em or something, but i felt this deserved its own thread.

I will say right away, that I add to the problem.

It's true for me too, that I am often helping IRC move off topic.

But the off topic discussions aren't really what bother me.

The things that get me, are when people start bashing a person, company or group because of their beliefs, or their personal situations.

It may be true that whatever problem they are having is their fault.

But do we really have to point that out? Or should the person be discussing these personal matters? I kind of see both sides to it. But what thing I belive to be true, No matter how far from Macs or whatever the MLA was founded on, We are a community. We are a community that is brought together because we all share one interest. But if we don't talk about anything but macs, what sets up apart from other Mac forums? I think that we would be less of a community if we couldn't talk about other things. If we have to, we could have an IRC Channel that focuses on Mac Support and another that lets talk about whatever. Well I'll end this rant. I would like to hear others opinions on this topic.

I left #68kmla about a month ago for just this reason.

There was (and still is apparently) way too much stupidity, flooding, and mean-ness going on in there, I got tired of it. So I left.

If you bring something up in a public discussion, you should atleast expect to hear from people who do not agree with everything you say. Too many times people post something and then cry about another poster not agreeing with them (same in the IRC channels), grow up.

The reason the IRC channel turned out like it did is because of the type of people who frequent it, and lack of any moderators to keep people in line.

Here is some advice: If you have many interests try joining forums and IRC channels that are for that interest. Don't try to make the 68kmla the one stop for all topics. Offtopic posts and chat should be less then 50% of what you type, if not you are in the wrong place. Just because you are in a group that likes Macs does not mean the group likes everything else you like as well, so think before you bring something up.

Well, define the channel. I always look at it as a place where the members of the 68kMLA can get together for a bit of fun, and a bit of support. We talk about everything, basically. On the other hand, some people think it should be "ALL MAC, NOTHING ELSE!".

The shortfall is that we only talk about Macs half the time anyway. We've tried to keep it all Mac, and the channel has ended up in hours of silence.

The problem compounds because the users have conflicting opinions on what the channel should be about, and what it should be used for, and try to act like a dictator by taking it upon themselves to flame out and drive away those who don't comply to their belief in the channel.

So we can dictate everything said in the channel, make it nothing but Mac support and Mac support only, but you're only asking for hell. Sometimes the folk here, who have come to know each other in a digital form, just want a place to talk about a few different things, voice a few opinions, have a little fun. If you want to take that away from us, by all means do so. We'll just have to find another way around it.

I like to think of the channel as a bit of a hangout, not so much officially connected with this website anymore, but spot in which to occasionally hear a bit about some mac or another.

Most of the Mac questions and things I honestly think would go over better in the forum, just because there's less of an expectation of "this will be answered now" and more of an expectation that "this will be answered accurately." The channel on the other hand, is a bit of a hangout, where you go to talk casually about whatever.

It's fine to a certain extent, but when it gets to the point it reached yesterday, then I start becoming even more depressed about the situation, and unfortunately "The State Of The Channel" isn't very great right now.

This is why we need an eWorld clone.

(Don't you just love it when I pop out of nowhere? :p )
