Lc ii recap

My lc ii showed up today. First board in a long time that had a partial battery leak. Wasnt bad, but bad enough. Two broken traces underneath and beside. Board was typical cap goo. Cleaned up nice, and recapped. On first boot got chime, mouse, floppy icon. second attempt, chime, grey screen, sad mac chime. Decided to pull board and thoroughly wash it, scrub and dry.. will boot in morning and see if that improves. Could be sound chip, or dirty cap goo under onboard memory possibly?

I had one in worse shape than that, recapped it. It would only power on if I flipped the power four or five times.

Washed the board, dried it, put it back in. Powers on every time now.

You should consider starting a YouTube channel! So many projects that you've got going on, and a good voice for videos too. Would love to watch your process in getting these running again.

So many people dont give enough thought into the importance of washing the board.. it is a must for me.. warm dish soap water, light scrub everywhere, rinse really well, then rinse with distilled, and final rinse in isopropyl. Blow out all sockets with air, then let air dry. Never in a rush to power these on after a clean for me

Hope yours works out... My 100 has been mostly stable, with a few hiccups here and there where it was cranky about starting. Probably corrupted data in the PRAM, my batteries are at a marginal voltage and that can cause issues. Most of the time it boots fine though, usually only gets angry when I unplug power and then don't give it a minute to sit before plugging it back in.

Yeah, heard they can be temperamental. Hoping i can get it going tomorrow or Wednesday. Will power up this lc ii in the morning and see if the deep clean worked. I just got a parts iici and believe it or not, board worked out of the box. I cleaned boArd, recapped it, and she works excellent. Every other iici board i have had to remove chips, clean pads, put back on. The startup circuit can be a real pain.. this board sent from heaven lol

You do sell a lot of the stuff you fix here, I’ve had an idea before to try to get a system going to get one Mac, recap/repair, sell, use that money to get another, repeat just to get as many of these boards going again. Time is running out after all as corrosion will render many boards unfixable eventually. Haven’t given that a go yet, but I do wonder if that’s part of what you do. I’d say that’s a noble service!

While keeping a personal collection of course… you’ve got an 840av, right? Bet you’re never letting that one go if so!

Well, i do sell some. What i do, is keep what i want as a collector, fix what i can, sell what i dont need. I have been getting more into picking up anything lately just to rescue it and get it going. Those kind of items i will most likely sell. I tend to keep like 3 of one lol.. i have 3 se/30 that i recapped and cleaned up, 3 iici fixed up, 3 quadra 660av that needed recapping etc. plus my newer Mac collection (ibook clamshells, powermacs, powerbooks etc). Never hurts to try and make a buck off your talents!

Yeah, that’s the kind of thing I want to get into doing. What’s better than rescuing helpless old macs and making a bit of money on the way? :)
Nothing wrong with having 3 SE/30s either. That’s one to keep stock, one to mod with an 040 upgrade and a grayscale card, and one to get an external color video card for ;)

Yeah, was always my favorite compact mac. Have color classics, and love them too. Been at collecting for a long time. Have to find the right deal! The rescuing macs is actually new to me this last year. Never thought i would dive so deep into this, but i always loved taking things apart as a kid and seeing what made it tick;) i like other computers too (amiga etc) but so expensive. What keeps me going on macs is that little happy face and start up bong when you fix its ailments.. kind if like a thank-you

Yep, it’s always a happy feeling when I get that happy max after a fix. Only happened a few times for me so far (PB 100 and 145 have been my only total restorations so far, lots of other minor fixes though) but always made me happy. And good luck on the LC II! Will check back tomorrow to see the results.
