LaCie Joule 730 HD Problems

I have a LaCie Joule 730 HD. It's an external SCSI hard drive with a Quantum Lightning 730s 2400 inside it.

It spins up and the electronics seem to work ok, but the drive itself does not seem to operate properly. I last got it working on a Macintosh SE about 6 years ago, but when I recently tested it on a Quadra 630 it does not mount, and Anubis 2.54 cannot format it. Drive Setup says <not supported>.

I get the following messages from Anubis:
Formatting drive with default interleave
Format failed
Trying alternate format...
Format failed
Error in Alternate Format
Error Sense Key= 02 04

I'm thinking the drive just failed, but are there any other possibilities? I wouldn't expect to need a driver...

PS: Yeah I know it might be obvious, but I'm asking on the off chance it may be something else. I plan to sell it either way and I would like to make an informed listing!

The drive is dead. But you can use the case to take the drive out and put another one in there.

It doesn't look like anyone's that interested in refurbishing it, so I thought I'd take a whack at it myself. 50-Pin SCSI drives are kinda rare (and failure prone thanks to age) so I figure I'll get a 50-Pin converter for a modern enterprise SCSI interface (like SCA 80-Pin), and find a way to stuff it in the enclosure!

I opened up the enclosure and ran into some weird connections. Looks like they come from a 6p5c connector that goes right into the SCSI interface, and plug into the IDE, but what is it for??? There's two little labels near two of the pin headers, which say "LED", which appears to be a green wire, and "RED" which appears to be a red wire. I'm guessing it's for the activity light on the dock?

The header from the SCSI interface converter: https://www.dropbox.com/s/udeamrnbeiacatn/IMG_20150726_123054368.jpg

The plugs going into the IDE of the SCSI drive: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cze0kjj7qox870k/IMG_20150726_123100466.jpg

I also looked at a PATA Quantum drive for reference, to see if there were any similar plugs... and there was! But, only one of them: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vv5wyx5d6g6s2yc/IMG_20150726_123108691.jpg

It's probably for the SCSI ID selector.  The case probably has a selector on the outside which attaches to the scsi id jumpers on the drive.

Ah, okay. I wonder if that's required to get it working at all. My plan is to use one of these HP SCSI drives , which I think has an 80-pin SCA interface, with a converter to the 50-pin interface. Do you think it would work?

A lot of those 80pin to 50 pin adapters have jumpers for scsi id selection that are just like those on older drives.  Just keep an awareness of where pin 1 is and it should work.
