IIfx - how to boot from HD and LAN connection Qs

I have a IIfx to sort, today I've sorted many problems (at one point the PSU blew smoke into the room whilst switched off! freeky  ) but currently have a few issues with which I wonder if you guys could give me some pointers please .

1. I managed to boot the IIfx from floppy on OS7, looks good. I have a 40MB Apple HD from my Performa200 which now runs in my IIfx but... the IIfx wants to boot from the floppy and not the HD. There is a full OS7 on the HD so my question is and I guess it's an easy one, how do I get the IIfx to boot from the HD? I have tried the Control Panel "Select Disk" and that is set to HD.

2. My mission is to get this IIfx on the internet, I have a Dayna DynaPORT E/II-3 card in the IIfx and would like to know what is needed to get connected to my house LAN - software needed for the IIfx that is

Thanks in advance. :)

I'm sure I've tried that, I read pressing the "d" key on bootup forces the IIfx to boot from HD, ahem.. it starts and the screen/system halts with that message box "Welcome to Macintosh"

Is the System 7 installation on the hard disk one for a IIfx? It might be that it is specific to its previous CPU. Hard disk installations could be "for any mac" or "for this mac". If it is the system 7 from the previous machine, you might try wiping the System from the HD and installing from floppy disks on the IIfx.

hey basalgangster.. you are one step ahead of me! :) I have just discovered my floppy disk set for OS7.0.1 does seem to have different installs for different Macs. I found the install for the IIfx and all seemed well, but gloom, although when swapping floppies (Install1, Install2, Tidbits, Fonts) it even says Successful Install.. but... upon reboot, it then delcares there is a problem with the install and Install may fix this, I'm currently on the 3rd install.

I'd rather not wipe the HD as there seems to be some useful applications on there such as Iomega Zip stuff and Hard Disk Toolkit from FWB Software. I'm currently back to booting from my orginal floppy (made with the same OS7.0.1 disk set) to see what can be done.

Phew!

Certainly there is no need to wipe the disk. Just the system folder. But judging from your recent experience, this might not help. The error message sounds strange to me. No clue what it thought was the problem with the install? What happens when you try to boot from the hard disk? How far does it get?

At the moment I now have the new 9GB ( as 2+2+2+2+1GB) HD successfully partitioned using the FWB Software and used the OS7 install disks to install Mac IIfx specific on the first volume, I've now set the drive to SCSI:0 also on the buss I have the 40MB Apple drive still connected which is now SCSI:2 as it contains many usefull apps.

I've used the Control Panel - Startup Disk util to point to the volume on which the System folder has been installed, also used the FWB tools to mount the drive (which now needs doing every boot up, wasn't the case when addy was 2 - clue??). Once mounted I can access the 2GB etc. as normal - but still have to boot from the startup floppy.

OK so no floppy inserted, power up.... the happy mac icon pops up :) then the HD gets accessed and eventually a dialogue box pops up "The "system" file on this startup disk may be damaged. The installer can be used to repair this disk" - game over.

Just a though (grasp of desperation) I am assuming the boot HD needs to be SCSI addy 0. I have just seen something that may contradict that...hmm. but if a SCSI device was set to addy 0 then the IIfx wouln't boot coz of addy conflict...hmm.. anyway.. any suggestions please?

Just another thought: I wonder if there is a setting on my boot floppy that needs changing.

:) IT WORKS!!!

OK here's the solution:

I don't know if this is important or not it was just a part of the plan, the new HD is now set to addy 1.

I figured the IIfx might be trying to boot from 2 OS, one that I have just installed and the old Performa200 one residing on the Apple 40MB. So I disconnected the Apple HD - IIfx failed to boot, I suspected the scsi load (now lighter by one unit) so I added a scsi termy to the buss and presto! The system boots in 10 sec. that is "wickedly fast" 8-o The IIfx scsi bus seems to want 2 termys.

Still more to do, ethernet and colour SuperMac Spectrum Power video to sort. Thanks for the suggestions. :approve:
