I've heard of symptoms like this in the past and it doesn't look great. I checked with a friend and this issue is often a failing down converter (the DC to DC thing that looks like a PSU attached to the side of the logic board, but the issue is, iMacs haven't really been rare or valuable enough for people to generally solve this type of issue. Generally the most cost effective solution has been to buy a spares machine and swap parts rather that do complex trouble shooting.

If you get another that has an obviously different issue, you could swap the down converters over. That might fix it. Might not.

The other issue is that there isn't a huge number of people working on these machines on this forum, so experience is thin on the ground. They're just not that rare and precious (yet).

Leave it plugged in - then try after a few hours. Might even need longer to sit. That's only a temporary fix, if it even works at all. It does sound like a DC board issue.

I'd agree if this was a Slotloader, but it isn't. M4984 is a Trayloader partnumber, and the Slotloaders also don't have combo green/orange LEDs in the power button, they are white. The Trayloaders are a significantly different design that lack the DC to DC converter board. This sounds like a flyback issue, which is very common on the Trayloaders. A replacement from HR Diemen, partnumber HR46176, is still available from some sources, and I would suggest anyone with Trayloaders to buy them while they're still available. I certainly stocked up with six of them, as I plan to complete my iMac G3 Trayloader collection (Bondi + the five Fruits).

I can second this 100%. I bought one recently (Donberg no longer has them sadly), and replaced my Grape tray loader's flyback. Went well and now I have a fully working iMac G3 tray, so once I replace the caps on it I should be able to keep it running for hopefully another 20 years! :D

yeah this is several months later but.... ???? this is absolutely false! the white power LEDs are in LATER slot loaders, but the earlier ones DO have green/orange power LEDs
