HP_Mini <-> "Beater" (1400c) via crossover 10BaseT??

Trash80toHP_Mini

NIGHT STALKER
The title says it all, except:

OS 9.X <-> ubuntu NetBook Remix, JJ, (?) not the newer one released October 09.

I'd like to have a secure, KISS/portable, hardwired connection between Beater, my maxed out 1400c/Crescento 466/G-3 and my HP_ Mini 1030NR. I'm hoping to be able to tweak the file sharing settings, to OFF over WiFi and to ON over Ethernet, for both systems. Dunno if it's even possible on either end, but that's the plan/dream setup anyways. [;)] ]'>

The only choice available when I open up the control panel/settings/whatever on HP_Mini is "Windows Network" so I need to know what kinda crap I've got to download & Install for the 'NIX end of things, I'm fairly sure I've got a handle on how to get connected from the Mac end, but my last Linux experience was with Debian, circa Y2K.

I've got to get 9.X drivers, if available (or a newer 10/100BT Card, preferably internal, if available ::) ) for the Global Village FAX/10BT (possibly 10/100? Dunno, I haven't got it with me, ATM) PC Card, so I can load them onto the OS 9.X 1 GB PC Card in the bottom slot. The Wireless card in the top slot works fine. Right now I've got to boot from the internal HDD under OS 8.1 for Beater to recognize the 10BT PC Card.

To share files on the Ubuntu end you'll need to install "netatalk". If you google "netatalk ubuntu" you'll find a lot of howtos for building custom versions including features omitted from the builds included with older ubuntu versions, but since all you care about is talking to an OS 9 machine on a wired network you can ignore them. Just "sudo apt-get install netatalk". (Or use the GUI to install it, whatever works.)

So far as I know there's no GUI for configuring Netatalk, but if you're happy with just accessing your home directory it'll work out of the box. By default it'll allow logins over all interfaces, but if you want to lock it down to a particular interface you can just put the interface name in /etc/netatalk/atalkd.conf as detailed here:

http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/2.0/htmldocs/configuration.html

Mounting shares from a Mac on Linux is harder. You probably don't want to mess with that.

There are 16 bit PCMCIA fast ethernet cards available, that work with a PB1400. You might like to check this post. Be aware of the fact that my fiberline fast ethernet card is not very reliable. It sometimes tends to lose the connection unexpectedly while transmitting large files.
