Hiya guys,

Here's the problem...

I have a PowerBook Titainium 867Mhz. I plan to install MacOS 9.2.2, only the original seller didn't supply the original disks and having a huge problem getting any sort of system software on there, that make the system function correctly.

I'm wondering, is it at all possible to extract system files from the original System installler CD's? I believe they're in a odd file format.. I have both the Retail System 9.0.1 disc with the 9.2.2 upgrade. However nether of them will boot the machine. Is there a way to stripstream the two? Anyone know how I can do this?? Tips? or Suggestions?

BTW, I have an rough Idea what should be in the system folder... just don't have the right software to boot the system.

Have you tried connecting it to one of your other macs in firewire target disk mode (hold down T on startup)? You should then be able to run the 9.01 installer and the 9.2.2 update from your other mac and choose the mounted TiBook's drive as destination.

Yep.. it'll install the wrong version to the target machine... that's why I'm experiencing a rather unstable machine... At present the machine works, boots up fine and on the odd occasion it'll stall and bomb out!!

So, since I can't seem to find a source to buy the correct OS (Mac OS 9.2.2 minimum), I though I should create one with the source files I have, that said doesn't mean it'll be 100% right... but it's the only choice I have right now unless some kind soul here tells me otherwise.

This Powerbook originally came with OS 9.2.2 - which means it can't use earlier versions of the OS. So 9.0.1 won't work on it - it doesn't have the necessary support files.

Your 9.2.2 disc appears to be an updater disc, yes? So it may or may not have all the necessary files even if you use TomeViewer to manually extract them.

In order to function, Classic Mac OS needs a System Folder with just a few files in it - System, Finder, Mac OS ROM, and the Fonts folder (along with the major System fonts). You could use the Fonts folder from 9.0.1, but everything else would need to be in 9.2.2. Your 9.2.2. might have them, or it might just have the chunks of them necessary to update the 9.2.1 versions of them.

Your only other option would be to install OS X Jaguar 10.2.3 or higher, which also supports this machine. (Some earlier ones shipped with 10.2.1, but since there's no real way of knowing if you have one of those, you should consider 10.2.3 the minimum.)

Your cheapest and simplest method might be to buy a used set of 10.3 Panther CDs. You can get them on the LEM Swap list sometimes, for $20 to $30 shipped. In addition, IIRC because 10.2 and 10.3 installer CDs will install the Classic Environment, it's also possible to use them to install OS 9.2.2 directly, which might be another way to achieve what you're trying to do.

When you say it's installing the wrong version do you mean it's installing a version for, say, your 7500 instead of the Powerbook? If that's the case you need to customize the install. Look for that button during setup and you should find the option to install a universal system that works on all Macs.

I guess this is a few days stale, but none-the-less...

Do you have the restore DVDs for a newer PowerPC Mac? Doesn't really matter which, just as long as its same age or newer. Hidden on the restore DVD (the second one if there's two) is a disk image that contains a copy of 9.2.2 to enable "Classic" support. If you put your Ti into Fireware target disk mode and copy the System file from that image over to it it should work. (I used to have an 867 Mhz Ti and it booted fine off a "Classic" folder on the few occasions I booted into Classic.) Of course, if you have a newer PPC Mac with Classic support on it you can get the same results by just dragging over its Classic system folder.

The only thing I remember not working was the "ATI Graphics Acceleration" extension. There may be a newer ATI driver that works on a Ti, but I never cared.

Of course, the other obvious thing to note is if you have a working newer PPC Mac you could just use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy over a working OS X install and be done with it.

Excuse me, why do i need the "classic support enabler" ?

I'm not wanting to install OSX or load classic via OSX. I'm want to run MacOS9.22 natively.

Sorry for the late reply. I don't have any classic restore disks for this machine or another PowerBook. Though I have one 9.2.1 but the system refuses to boot from it.. and opening the disk I only see a .tome image. I think everything I have has already been mentioned here, non of the disks I have seem to work on this Ti simply because they're too old.

Surely someone knows of a place where they have some images. Preferably a Generic 9.2.2 ISO. :)

As an added note, if it's the DVI model of the 867MHz TiBook, even a retail 9.2.2 disc (if those existed) will not work (or won't work well) so you do need to find the 867/1000MHz DVI TiBook install CD, which makes you install Mac OS X and *then* Mac OS 9.

From there, if you are absolutely adamant about getting a machine with ONLY Mac OS 9 installed, your best bet will be to preserve the OS 9 installation (onto an APM/HFS+ flash drive, for example) and then wipe the hard disk again and then put the OS 9 installation back onto the hard disk.

The one potential exception to this is the netboot for mac os 9 image: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120243

Using another machine, what I would do is copy the stuff from that image to a USB stick, partitioned as Apple Partiiton Map and formatted as HFS+, and then boot the mac to it, and then disable/remove all of the netboot stuff, and then copy everything to the TiBook's hard disk.

In the case that 9.2.2 retail discs don't exist, the disk that would be needed for a TiBook would be from a TiBook. The 867MHz and 1000MHz DVI models shared the same install disks, so it sounds like the only/best way to get everything installed is either to find one of these disks (Temetka might have one, I know that's where mine went) or to possibly try the 9.2.2 netboot image.
