Hacking the Happy Mac

I spent some time making new Happy Mac icons today:

I put the sunglasses dude on my Mac Plus with the ROM-inator board. I like to reboot repeatedly, just to see the icon. :)

As it stands, I can easily modify the 16x10 pixel area inside the "screen" area of the Macintosh icon. Replacing the whole thing would require a more complex ROM change.

Can ResEdit be used to edit the ROM files? Its the only thing I ever used to edit anything resembling "code".

Not ResEdit, because it's not a resource. But you could probably use a hex editor like FEdit.

I edit the ROM data file on a Windows computer, using the free hex editor xvi32. Then I copy it to the Mac and update the ROM-inator's flash memory. The happy face is stored beginning at offset $FD2 (hex) in the ROM code file. It's 20 bytes long (16 x 10 bitmap at 1 bit per pixel).

Good point! ROM-inator is specifically for the Plus and 128K/512K, but I bet with dougg3's ROM SIMM for the Mac II series, you could bang out a new full-color Happy Mac.
