G4 Gigabit 400, 533 dual?

Good morning!

So i have a G4 with gigabit Ethernet running at 400MHz (4x100), 512MB PC133 (4x128). I have a dual G4 533 (4x133) in my possession and would like to install it. Now to fit this i will have to remove and/or relocate the IDE connector, but before i go through this i was wondering if the chip would even work in the system.

I know with only a 100MHz FSB it will only run (if it even does) at 400MHz, but if i mod the multiplier to x5.5, would it work at 550 (5.5x100)? I'm not sure how flexible these chips are in that manner. IF it will only run at 400 (again assuming that it may work at all) it would still be 2x the CPU that's in there now, but i don't know how well it would perform with the miss matched bus speeds.

Has anyone tried a similar project? Any input?

Thanks! ;)

For the hassle involved , I'd just get the right board that matches the dual 533 chip. A working logicboard would probably be only $20 on ebay.

Yes i have just come to that conclusion lol. I have a DA mac siting here with a bad mobo, and missing all the plastic parts, but i have enough laying around i can make a decent machine.

Go to xlr8yourmac.com. Find their CPU upgrades user reports database. Search by your machine, and Upgrade Manufacturer=Apple.

Also check their FAQ and Machine Specific pages.

If you're changing logic boards, check whether you need to change or hack a power supply too.

I was looking there, but some of these upgrades are hard to come by and pretty expensive. I do have a PSU that will work, i have most of the case as well.

I meant use the User Reports database to search for examples of 533s in Gigabits so you can see if anyone's succeeded and what the hurdles involved are.
