Formatting Troubles

I am stumped. I bought a new 1.2gb Apple-branded SCSI seagate "hawk" for my 550. First bit of weirdness, the screw holes for the sled do not match up. I cannot put the backplate on the 550 unless I just rest the HD on the sled with no screws. Second, the annoying adapter bridge from the HD to the 550's internal connector does not sit very well. The pin side is flush, but the power side on the HD sticks up slightly at the end.

Upon powering up with the brand new and unformatted disk via the 7.6.1 CD, everything powers up, makes SCSI noises, and whirrs. But- HD setup utility says there are no devices to initialize in the SCSI chain. What did I do wrong? Could it be that annoying bridge adapter?

Assuming a pre-initialized disk with 7.6 loaded would magically make the 550 work, I plugged the new drive into my 8600 to set it up. Clearly I know nothing about SCSI termination because I was greeted by a smiling mac face that never went away. I wish I knew more about this generation of hardware, but I don't. I would appreciate any pointers!

Sounds like a SCSI termination or conflicting SCSI ID issue to me.

Try resetting all of the jumpers to their default positions.

Assuming your drive is some Apple variation of the Seagate Hawk 2XL Disc Drive you can download the product manual (with pictures of where to place the jumpers) here:

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/manuals/scsi/77767489.pdf

If the default positions don't work, try changing the SCSI ID to "1" instead of "0"

If that doesn't work, try switching the position of the "Terminator Enable" jumper.

Hope this helps!
