I picked up a PM 7100/80 for parts, sure enough battery bombed (not horrifically as it looks like the machine was stored on its side) but I mostly got it for the working PSU and intact facia as I have one with a missing PSU and the facia was destroyed… but this had a nice little surprise in it!

I’ve always wanted one of these with the HPV card adapters so I’m rather chuffed. Haven’t tested it yet, but hopefully it’ll work!

Is that a G3 upgrade in the cache slot? And the ribbon connection to the HPV card, what's that for?

Edit: OK I think I see it's a PDS accelerator, a G3? Didn't know they ever made those. Was it just for the 7100 and 8100 maybe? How does the ribbon cable work - is it a passthrough so you can also use the HPV (and if so then how is it mounted)?

Yeah the processor upgrade goes into the PDS slot, and the ribbon connects to allow the HPV card to work! Pretty cool solution actually, although does use a NuBus slot (although doesn’t actually need the connector so I suppose if you were imaginative it could be put somewhere else I guess!)

So last night I wasn't able to sleep, so I had a look at a 6400 I picked up a couple of years ago and didn't touch (other than removing the battery).. And it has what looks like a 10/100 Comm Slot II ethernet card in it, a Farallon PN998. If it works that'll be a sweet win.. now if only I could find a Comm Slot II raiser for my TAM...

So.. spurred on my wife to help a little with my current mental state of affairs (she’s such a lovely lass.. I don’t deserve her!) I had a little bit of an eBay spree. Went on a cross country trip today to collect it all and.. oh my there was an exciting surprise! This isn’t all of it but here’s the highlights:

Apple 17” Multiple Scan Monitor. Working but the stand is ruined, however I happen to have a perfect condition replacement! Alas the flap is broken.. but aren’t they all?

Another LC 520! Afaik there’s only 3 of this form factor in the UK and I now have 2 of them!

A Heidelberg Linoscan A3 scanner.. it’s HUGE!

A PowerMac 7200.. nothing exciting EXCEPT the fully working PCI DOS compatibility card with the freaking GIMO CABLE! This one I’m super excited about!

There was lots of other bits and bobs.. a batter bomber LC with a possibly salvageable network card, and a G3 desktop with a G4 upgrade and a PCI ATI Radeon 7000 card.. and lots of keyboards and mice and other useful cables.

So.. uh.. I need a new garage!

Well it’s gonna be retrobrited so that wouldn’t be an issue. I always just felt the stickers looked like some horrible Compaq with stickers all over the damn thing..

I would normally agree but for some reason I like this one and the ones seen on other similar machines like the Color Classic and IIvx.

I’m kind of itching to peel off the bright red ‘Ready for PowerPC Upgrade’ sticker on my newest 540c. It spoils the sleekness of the 500 series design and somehow offends me in the way it suggests the brand new machine you’ve just bought is already obselete. A full 68040 is far better than than the cacheless 100MHz 603e Apple were offering too, lol. However, as you, I do feel like removal would be a bit sacrilegious.

Ultimately if you’re planning to keep the machine I’d suggest doing what makes you happier, if you can’t live with it then there’s not much point leaving it on.

Yeah I don’t mind it on the CC, but it’s just the QT logo. The others.. not so much.

I may try to remove it non destructively.. try and get a sharp blade under it and then squirt in some ipa.. keep it safe in case someone else ever wants one.

Yeah the ready for PPC logo label was rather poorly placed. I’d certainly remove that one!

I wish the NewerTech PPC upgrade my 550c has was the 183mhz with cache model, but alas it’s just the 166mhz one

Factory stickers should be kept IMO. And retrobrighting avoided at all costs, especially on something as brittle as an LC AIO case!

Yeah, I'm sure there are less intrusive/destructive methods, but I just think... this shit is old, may as well let it be old rather than pretend we can make it all look new again when we usually can't. Yellowed plastic, once retrobrighted, tends to go yellow again anyway, unless you put effort into UV protecting it in some way.

I know what you mean. I do have UV protection on the window in my study, so everything I’ve retrobrited has pretty much stayed looking as it did when first done.

Personally I only do some units, tends to be the ones that are very yellowed. This 520 is on the borderline.. it’s certainly far less yellowed than the other 520 I have. Thing is I plan to dismantled both of them and install some support struts on the inside to take the weight off the facia. I figure if I’m going to the effort of doing that I may as well do a full restore as I’d rather not ever have to re-open them!

image.jpgFinally, I can install Windows 3.1 on my LCII! Time to find out what this Doom game they keep going on about is like.

I have SoftPC, but I’m pretty sure it requires a PowerPC.

May have to try it on my MDD - it’s been years since I messed around with it.

Oh and also a binder full of CDs! I’m dead chuffed about this one as it was only £5 and the seller accidentally sent it to the wrong person, so I didn’t actually think i was going to get it, so I was very excited when it arrived!!
