I have already posted about this in the PowerMac forms, but decided to post it here too.
I posted on my local craigslist looking for old Macs. After having some people contact me, but not able to cut a deal, I finally got a really bite. A lady contacted me saying she had 6 Macs and to call her. I asked her what she had, and said she had no idea of the models, but her brother used to work for Apple as a Senior Engineer and she said "Most of it probably worked because he wouldn't have kept it if it hadn't.". From the pictures, all I saw were 2 Blue & White G3 or G4 PowerMac towers, 1 Bondi Blue iMac with tray loading drive, and 1 Graphite CRT Studio Display. I would have been interested in the iMac, but because of the fact I have an eMac, I really have no way to display it properly due to the lack of space. I was going to call her and let her know I wasn't interested, but right before I was going to say I wasn't interested, she said, "Oh! I almost forgot about the Cube!" That caught my attention! I asked how much, she said "How about $10?". I told her I would be down there the next day to pick it up. True to my word, I was there the next day at the set time, and she was out there ready to sell it. She asked me to come in and see it, which I did. I realized it was still in a pile of stuff and I had to dig it out. One of the times I stepped back, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the monitor that would have been sold separately originally, and wanted to know how much. She asked me to make an offer, so I offered her another $10 for it. She said sure, and I grabbed it. We had to go out to a shed to get the speakers, which at first I thought were broken because of the rubber ring around the speakers was completely gone. Once I got it in my car, I looked it over and asked about the spots on the top of the casing. She said it was some sort of mold, and that it was common for the Cubes. After some research, I found out this was never a problem with the computer. She had also said how her house had leaks. I started to think, "Oh boy. I'm about to spend $20 on a computer setup that doesn't work.". She didn't have the power cable, mouse, or keyboard, so that made me feel even better (sarcasm). When I pulled out of her driveway with the Cube in the backseat, I started telling myself "Even if it doesn't work, I'm classifying this as a rescue.
When I got it home, I took the acrylic casing off the top of the actual internals (wouldn't hold the internals up at the time), and started loosening screws. I wasn't even home 10 minutes before I found a way to separate the metal casing inside the acrylic, and starting cleaning. The red "mold" was really just red dirt mixed with water (scary) and it cleaned off with a damp paper towel and Dawn soap. Odd part was maybe her brother or maybe she put a piece of blue painter's tape over the CD drive inside the computer. Maybe so water wouldn't leak into it? Anyway, one of the clips that held the computer suspended in the case was slightly bent, just so it wouldn't clamp in. Fixed that. Gave the entire top casing a GOOD cleaning, and after using a whole roll of paper towels, looks brand new! After just a few wipes on the inside of the acrylic, and the paper towel was BLACK. I'm still waiting for a power cord from eBay to test the Display and Computer, but I have a feeling they work, due to the fact that I put the AirPort Card into my eMac and it worked, and the speakers worked.
Will update when I get the power adapter.
