Conquests: Macbook, iBook G3

Well, this is my first post here and I figured I'd start out by kinda introducing myself a little and posting my first two "new" and "semi-vintage" mac conquests :) .

As for myself, I've been a Mac enthusiast for a while now, back in Kindergarten, the first computer I believe I laid hands on was a Power Mac 5200. Since then, I've grown to love the Mac OS operating system, and I'm trying to phase Windows back out of my life.. lol. Although most of my experience has been on PowerPC Macs, I've still been amazed by the few 68k Macs I've met. (By the time I entered grade school, they were in the process of phasing out 68k Macs with G3's.. kinda funny to say that because now they're "phasing out the G3s/ G4s with XP machines xx( " (Yes, XP.. the school district buys brand new Vista/ 7 computers, wipes the HDD's and installs an XP image. Go figure).

Anyway, at home I've grown up on PCs. My first PC.. if anyone remembers those limited edition "promotional" Hot Wheels computers made by a company called Patriot.. haha. Naturally, it was a complete lemon. Windows 98, ~500 MHz Intel Processor, 64 MB RAM, 10 GB HDD. By the time we got rid of it, (about 2 years actual use, 5 years overall), it went through a motherboards, about 4 power supplies, a CD-ROM drive and a video card (if my memory serves me well). Also kinda funny it didn't act up until the one year warranty expired.. we ended up getting a refurbished HP Pavilion XT853 tower from the extended warranty (the company went out of business a year after we bought the computer, no idea who the warranty was with). The Pavilion lasted me until High School, and now my current machine is a Acer Aspire T135 desktop. I never really wanted another Windows computer after using Windows ME for 5 years, but I adapted to XP.

I kinda got away from Macs going into secondary school, after elementary school.. the school district started purchasing XP machines to phase out the Macs. It wasn't until Sophomore year that I got back using Mac OS X Tiger in the broadcasting classes I started to take. And, from then on I've been hooked to Mac OS...

TO THE CONQUESTS...

I've always wanted a Mac. Even before my first computer, I remember going to stores like Sears and seeing iMac G3's lining the walls and getting upset when my mom looked away from them... haha good days. After using Windows over half my life, I finally decided to save up for a Mac over time. Around the time the Aluminum MacBook's came out, I had just enough to purchase a MacBook. I decided to go into the "Refurb" section and see what they had, and spotted that they still had some Black MacBook (2.4 GHz/ 2 GB RAM/ 250 GB HDs) in stock for about $1,100 and decided to buy one of those instead of a new MB.. simply because I wanted the best storage space and specs that I could get with what I had. And thus, I got the Black MacBook and I've been more satisfied with it than any other computer I've had in my possession. Saved me many times when my desktop has crashes when I wait until the last minute to type papers!

After spending nearly my life savings on a MacBook, I didn't exactly feel comfortable totting it around high school with me, so I decided to invest in another Mac laptop. Originally, I was very broad with what I wanted.. I looked on eBay for months from Powerbook 520's to iBook G4s. In a sense, I wanted something pre-OS X but still would be able to function to write papers on, take notes, maybe basic web surfing? Well, I found a 'buy it now' auction on a iBook G3 500 MHz for $80.00. There wasn't much information listed, just pretty much said that it was a former school laptop and it had factory specifications. I thought $80 was a tad high considering it was kinda beat up and still had factory specs, so I offered $40. Well, the next day I found out the seller actually accepted the offer (completely amazed). I buy a offbrand adapter, and get the machine to find out.. its all that I expected. Lots of scratches, missing the ESC key, dead battery, trackpad issues.. however worked fine plugged in. I was rather shocked that the school district from NC didn't wipe ANYTHING off of it, it literally looked like they just turned it off and sent it on its way. Had MS Word installed (Mind you, this is OS 9.2), Appleworks 6, Some Adobe Pagemill App, KidsPix, some gradebook program (mind you, they deleted the program files for it), and lots of old papers and articles that I assume the kids wrote on it. After a day of using it, the OS died. Like literally, I meet the bomb of death. I've seen the bomb before, but NEVER like this. At first, it wouldn't load MS Word, it kept giving me "Type 1, 2, 3 Errors and suggested rebooting". Well, then those Errors turned into Bombs. And eventually, it rendered ALL of the applications on the machine inoperable, and then the OS itself. It wouldn't even start up with extensions off, bombed everything.. eventually locking me out of the OS completely. Luckly, I was able to obtain a OS 9.2.1 disk (thank GOD it worked) and I ended up wiping the iBook and starting over with a fresh install of 9.2. In the end, its not a half bad machine now that I have it working, but I would still like to upgrade the RAM from 64 MB and maybe the HDD in the future (heard they're unreal to replace).

As for pictures (I'm sure its expected).. heres some links:

And for fun, heres some ugly bomb errors (in order):

Welcome! I myself have a Core Duo GrayBook (Mix of White MacBook and Black one, built from 3 broken ones) and a few iBooks in my collection. I recommend you install 10.3 onto your iBook, because 10.3 is much more modern and you could use it for more daily tasks. Unless you're looking for laptop that has no distractions :b&w: . You could even try tiger if you wanted to.

with enough ram and a slightly larger hdd, tiger should run fine. i run it on my "school" computer, a pismo 500mhz g3, w/ 1 gb of ram, and i can even run iwork 08 on it. also same as you, i have the exact same macbook, and i leave that at home b/c i'd rather risk my $75 powerbook that i can fix w/ parts i already have, then my macbook i'm screwed if i break

Unlike you guys, it hurts me to bring a classic to school because I have so little parts, on my MacBook, I have almost two more sets of parts that I can throw in. Oh the irony

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I've considered Tiger, but then again I won't be able to get a hold of an OS X CD or RAM upgrades until July, so for now I think I'm going to stick with OS 9.2 (probably the best idea w/ 64 MB RAM lol). I didn't mention that I got the trackpad issues fixed.. the cure? When I installed the new battery, for some reason the trackpad stopped acting up. Eventually I'd also like to get a new case bottom, because its all scratched up and has the former school districts initials graved into the bottom (and on top of that, it looks like a four-year-old did it).

The only real problem I'm having sticking to OS 9 is a browser and printing. It's naturally my luck that I got rid of my OS 9 supported printer, and my new printer (All in one scanner/ printer/ etc), doesn't support OS 9. On Apple Support Discussions, some guy was trying to tell me how to set up my iBook connected to my MacBook to print but I didn't really understand what he was telling me, and I never got postscript printing to work. All in all, I'd like to be able to directly print via. usb cable directly to the iBook, but I don't know if thats even possible since the drivers aren't supported.

Browser related, when I last used OS 9 back in elementary school, I remembered it being fast and semi-decent. When I connected my iBook to the internet the other day, loaded IE 5... that kind of shattered my dreams lol. I know of Classila coming out and hopefully that will be a big improvement, but I don't meet the "ram" requirements to run it.. > :( . Might try iCab, but then again browsing isn't important to me due to it doesn't have wifi and I'm never around ethernet plug-ins. I did find a work around in some cases, visiting the "mobile" version of websites works well in IE (like m.facebook.com, m.google.com, etc. Lol).

Eventually I'd like to get some upgrades for it, but I don't have the money to invest in it right now. But outside of that, its been a great machine for what I needed it! :)
