Busy day working on the G3 iMacs

Slow week at the office, so what better time to continue cleaning and prepping older company machines for new homes? There's something satisfying about clearing away grime, pen marks, stickers and other junk away and revealing a surprisingly nice looking machine beneath.

Man, I don't remember keeping so many G3 iMacs, but as I went through the storage cabinets, there were a surprising number of them. The slot loaders all seem to have at least some cracked plastics: The clear plastic is okay, but the light grey plastic behind it doesn't fare so well, dunno why. And the slot loader that's in the best cosmetic shape is naturally also the one with a dead power supply! Found an eBay seller offering complete refurbished analog boards for $60 which I figure is 3x what the computer is worth, tops, but it does seem like a shame not to get it working.

But the real gem is the last of the tray-loaders: This one is really clean and still has the door which covers the ports. Hard drive was failing, so in went a 10 gigabyte drive that I had stockpiled some time ago, along with a 512M stick of RAM I found in my drawer (but the machine only recognizes 288 megabytes). I didn't think you could run Tiger on a 300 mhz system, but it seems to work okay. These G3s aren't real popular with my coworkers, so who knows, maybe I'll keep it for myself, but if I can get that slot loader working, and get a DVD drive for it, that might be fun too.
