Appletalk why do you hate me...

So I fired up my old color classic and put a network card in it. The machine detects it and I was able to set the TCP/IP settings to ethernet and drop my IP details in. Problem is, I can't switch the appletalk connection over to ethernet instead of the serial port. When I select ethernet, it waits a second then pops up with an error saying to check my network hardware. Running 7.5.3. Any ideas?

I've got the ethertalk extension along with all the usual appletalk stuff. Open Transport installed as well.

As for the network actually working, no idea as the system is pretty bare. The dongle piece is lit up though and I see activity if I try pinging it.

It sounds like you are missing some driver software for your ethernet card. The ethertalk extension does not suffice. What model card is it? What OS version are you using.

Note that the Link Status LED simply indicates that you have have a physical connection to a hub or switch. It provide no information about whether your operating system is talking to the card.

I'm fairly sure it was a farallon card, but I've put the machine back in storage as I needed the space for the new G4 I'm toying with. I'll mess with it again some other time.

The Apple EtherTalk extension is only intended for use with Apple ethernet cards, or onboard ethernet. If you're using a 3rd party card, such as your Farallon card, you need the 3rd party drivers for that card.

I have similar problem with AppleTalk though my problem is that on reboot AppleTalk switches back to LocalTalk. Is this because of a bad PRAM battery???

EtherTalk Phase 2 should work with the Farallon cards (it does with my EtherWave NuBus and EtherWave LC cards).
Yeah that extension is present. I'll dig up some other drivers at some point and throw them in there to see if it changes anything.

Are you using a cross-over cable instead of a hug or switch by any chance? This was a pretty common occurence with older Macs and cross over cables where the other computer must be booted up before the first computer will properly configure ethernet. This leads to booting one of the computers twice.
