Apple //GS and iMac G4 20"

Went to the recycling center today, and they had a lot of macs there, including an LC II and Mac IIsi, but all I took to keep was a //GS, which I have yet to test, and an iMac G4 20". I am incredibly excited about the 20" iMac. I'm installing leopard on it right now. I think this will make a great movie computer.

EDIT: tested the //GS, it shows a screen that says //GS copyright etc. then it goes to a screen that says "Check startup device" and has an apple flying back and forth on two lines under it. Any info as to what this means?

A feature that was added to the ROM 03 firmware that was entirely fun, instead of functional, was accessed by a specific key-sequence.

If the computer was booted with no disk in the drive, a message that said “Check startup device” appeared, with an apple symbol sliding back and forth.

At that point, if the user pressed the keys “Ctrl”, “Open Apple”, “Option”, and “N” simultaneously, the digitized voices of the Apple IIGS design team could be heard shouting “Apple II !”

I'm installing leopard on it right now.
Most stable version of mac os X for G4's (even for G5's) is 10.4.11

a 20-inch imac : max ram 1GB what is minimal for leopard

recommend ram for Tiger was already 1 GB

gecko, that is perfectly normal for a IIGS.

You will need to either find a 5.25" floppy drive and some software to boot, or a 3.5" drive and some software to boot, or even get a Localtalk box, and AppleShare 2.x (for sure) or 4.x (maybe) to remote boot the IIGS off the fileserver.. It's been a while since I did that with my IIGS machines though.

Ebay has a few really good priced 3.5" floppy drives up right now in the sub 20 dollar realm so that might be a good place to start. Do a google for the IIGS Fairway or similar and you will find a LOT of great IIGS software fwiw.

Good luck and excellent conquest!
