Anyone got a spare Beige G3 ROM?

My dad's just picked up a Beige G3 logic board, but it is missing everything. We have a space CPU, RAM and personality board...

But does anyone in the UK have a G3 ROM going spare?

Rev. A, B or C? If you get a Rev. A ROM, then slave drives will not be supported on the built-in IDE busses.

I can build you a ROM module with the C but there are a couple of issues.

The lessor issue is that I'm in the USA so shipping is a bear unless we can get @mg.man to travel again. :)

The bigger issue is that I'm swamped, so if you're able to source them otherwise, you should do that. The last guy I told I would do something, but warned I was really busy had to wait 13 years... Actually started in late 2008, IIRC...

Do you have any pics of the A/B/C ROMs? Will help with my local investigations.

They pretty much look the same, except that the chips have different Apple part numbers on them, depending on version. There were some circuit board revisions with changing part numbers, but you can't tell the ROM version from the circuit board part number, as they each overlapped with different revisions of the chips.

I don't have a photo handy. They're different from other ROM modules of this form factor in that htey have 2 slightly longer chips on just one side instead of 4 chips, 2 per side. There was a page at OWC on identifying "Wraith" ROMs many years ago. It was utterly misguided, as if focused on circuit board part numbers and ignored the chips.

IIRC, Rev. C chips are 341S0494, 341S0495, but that's an old memory. I don't have time to Google up an old post from myself which lists the numbers. I posted this info in various places back around ~2002 - 2007, but sources keep dropping off the net, like MacGurus forums, e.g.. Sigh.

I managed to find this which has some photos. They're not the greatest.

This link seems to be to the page I was describing above, but the link doesn't go to the page. Perhaps the Wayback Machine?

Ah, played with the URL and this seems to work:

Just to muddy the water, one of my Beige G3s has a 4-chip Rev A ROM.

Some of OWC's Rev A variants are just different manufacturing dates?! Or am I missing something. Not that it really matters, I think they're got a bit caught up in board revisions over ROM contents. Although perhaps it helps with identifying.

My three G3 ROMs (unfortunately I covered the chip versions without thinking when I made them easy for me to identify :s ):

I'm mainly going by the -S0402 and -S0403 P/Ns on mine. 🤔

Will see if I can fire up a G3DT or MT to confirm.

That's your best bet. The issue is that they're difficult to see in photos, and sometimes you see chips with the standard rom part labels, not the Apple part. I think both of my Rev A simms don't have the apple chip numbers, I can see "SEC" and AMD's logos.

If its there, it is a good way to tell.

My dad tested the board this afternoon and it doesn't power up with known good components from another G3. He might have been sold a dud. Sigh.

I've asked him to bring it with him next time he visits so I can see if there is any obvious faults.

No need for a ROM and VRM for now it seems.

Are there any common points of failure for a beige G3 board? Mine occasionally fails to boot, though fiddling and reseating parts always gets it going again.

People say that they don’t need recapping, though I am not sure about this. While I was working on my Personality card I recapped the one electrolytic that’s on there, next to the audio in and out ports, and there was evidence of leakage.

I would say 100% needing recap. I am on the fence with going polymer or tantalum on the newer machines.
