Amiga....

Picked up yesterday a (non-working so far) Amiga 4000/040 desktop with Warp Engine accelerator, Emplant Mac emulator card, 2 SCSI HDs, Mitsubishi DiamondScan monitor, loads of software/books/mags, etc.

Already using the monitor on another Amy but I really want to make the A4000 work!

Can you describe exactly what doesn't work? I (or other Amiga users here) might be able to help. If it fails to boot does it give a coloured screen? IF not does it just sit at a blank screen?

If it has been moved any distance it's worth popping the lid and making sure the Warp Engine is sat in the Fast Slot (CPU slot) properly. They do wander about a bit. Also does it have any IDE devices attached? If not you might have to wait up to a minute (including the SCSI delay for the Warp Engine also) before it starts to boot.

Warren Block's FAQ for the 4000 might also provide some useful tips:

Hi,

Thanks for the support.

The battery is not obviously leaking but I'm sure it's dead. Should it still be bootable with a dead battery?

I have removed and reseated everything removable, including the CPU card and CPU.

If I remove ALL the RAM SIMMs, I get the green "Chip RAM bad" error screen. If I reinstall just the Chip RAM SIMM, I get a grayish video raster and that's all.

There are no devices attached at all, and I've left it sit about 10 minutes, both with and without the two SCSI hard drives attached to the Warp Engine.

Grumble. No luck getting any life out of this thing (despite all the helpful guys here and on other forums). She's parts I'm afraid. I'll just have to stick with my 1200 for the time being.

Thanks guys!

The green screen is fairly logical, as Amiga's won't start without ChipRAM :)

The 4000 doesn't need a battery to work, mine's never had one (I got the guy I bought it off to remove it).

I'm a bit stumped really - if it were mine I'd swap the Warp Engine off for a standard 3640 CPU card and see if that helped.

This page details some possible causes - most likely is a looses CPU card - I've had problems with this on mine even after re-seating it.

A "local" guy (meaning: within 24 hours drive, and in the same country...) has made me an offer I can't refuse for my non-working A4000.

So I have a couple $ to spend upgrading my A1200 which I will be just as happy with....
