9" Compact Completists?

Just to additionally complicate things, here is my dual-floppy SE FDHD. I don't recall where I got it but I understand some were sold in the education market. There is no hard drive installed. The ethernet card is a recent addition.
Very cool! I always wondered if they made something like that.

A couple of incredibly pedantic things:
  • Classics came in two case variants - one with a speaker grille and one without.
  • The 128, 512, Plus, Classic and Classic II came in both 120V and 240V versions, and this was marked on the case,
Thanks will note the power versions.

Did the Classic I come with grilles? We did verify the II and it's Performa came both with and without grilles.

120V and 240V versions, and this was marked on the case,
Do I remember that it was possible to convert some 240v PSUs to 110v, but the 110v PSUs only did 110? So you could have an international 110v or 240v machine, but not a 240v US machine.

Only thing is that it might not have shipped like that.
@sstaylor your manufacture week is 7/31 to 8/6/89. The FDHD was introduced 8/1/89 (everymac) You may have one of the earliest surviving SE FDHDs!
Yes, but they will have been manufacturing them for months before the ship date.

This is certainly possible in theory on the 128/512/Plus, but I don't know if anyone has actually done it. Board markings claim that there were 110V and 240V international boards, but I don't know if there actually were from the factory or if it were just a design vestige. If anyone else knows, please tell me.

It might also be possible on the Classics, unsure.

I've had two that were originally equipped as such. One was like @sstaylor's where there was no hard drive installed. My current machine had an aftermarket drive bracket installed and has a 160MB hard drive on top of the second FDHD drive. When I got it, it had one of those 52MB Quantum drives installed and had 1MB of RAM, subsequently upgraded to 4MB.

http://www.applefool.com/Macintosh_SE_"FDHD".html - copy and paste link to view it.

Before I got it. Yes, it's one of the AppleFool.com machines. Analog board needs some help, but it is functional. Has a Sony CR44 power supply installed.

Re: the logo-only Pluses, they are all former 128, 512, or 512ke machines. So, there won't be any platinum logo-only Pluses. There might be some marked "Macintosh ED", which is what the 512ke became later on in life, before discontinuation in late 1987.

I don’t think anyone here has yet mentioned the platinum 512Ke that wasn’t badged as an ED.

It looks like a Plus from the front with the non-square Apple logo being in line with the drive, but has no silkscreened words on it. The rear is a 512k bucket in platinum.

I’ve only ever seen one and I think the guy who had it was in Asia but don’t quote me on that. Not sure what the Asian market got versus North America and Europe at the time.

Here are the photos of the serials of my dual 800k and HD SEs (the latter is a macquarium, as you can tell). According to macfaq, they are both from 88, but it lists the one with an HD incorrectly as a dual 800k.

My first love of the Macintosh world is definitely the 9" Compacts. So far I have an SE and a Classic, with eyes towards adding an Original/128k next. Curious how many folks out there are 9" Compact Completists, and to what degree. I think I have the full listing below but please do correct any errors.

1. Original Macintosh
a) Rebadged as Macintosh 128k
2. 512k
a) Upgraded version 512ke
3. Plus
4. SE
a) Upgraded version SE FDHD
5. SE/30
6. Classic
7. Classic II
a) Rebadged as Performa 200

So by my count that's 7 models, 2 upgraded versions, and 2 rebadged versions.
If you are going to be completist, then under 0. you need all of the pre-Launch macs that were made. These include the Twiggy macs, the macs used during development and so on. They mightn't be affordable or available but they most definitely belong in the list.

You're definitely the first to call out a platinum 512ke, and look what just listed on eBay!

However you've seen one without the ED badge on the front?

I think this is another great idea. Not sure how to approach and honestly I'm swamped working through the production versions alone.

Would you be up for taking point on the pre-prods? Maybe there are others who could help too?

@LaPorta thx for your SE pix

All - rather than use random pix of machines from ebay or Google images etc, how about if we feature pix of our 68k community machines in the pictorial guide?

I have to publish out an updated matrix with all the new info, I can mark pictures collected on that too.

For now here are the currently collected or earmarked pix
Classic I - no grills, M1420 model - mine
SE - single 800k floppy, M5011 model, no specs - mine
SE - 1/40 badge @rollmastr (maybe new pic? Need back pix)
SE - dual 800ks @LaPorta (need front pic)
SE - dual FDHD Floppies - @sstaylor

And considering all his efforts w the SE/30 Forever page, I think we should offer @joshc first rights to show off his SE/30, just coming back from a public appearance at the UK meet up!

Anything not listed above is fair game for contributions ;)

It's probably reasonable to assume that different configurations were available at different times and in different markets. They might not have offered 20MB at launch as a factory option but may have introduced it later, or it could have only been available in certain markets. Or it could've been a dealer / supplier thing where they installed it after purchasing from Apple and then sold it onto the customer with the 20MB drive.
