640CD: How to install DOS?

I had the pleasure to pick up a Performa 640CD with DOS card for FREE! yesterday.

This thing had its RAM upgraded to the max: 52 MB on the logic board and 32 MB on the DOS card. I played Doom and Wolfenstein 3D in DOS mode for a while.

I have a 40 GB hard drive laying around, so I took out the stock 500 MB dirve and put in the 40 GB drive. I installed System 7.6.1 and PC Compatibility 1.6.4. And then from "PC Set Up" in Control Panel, I created a DOS virtual drive file.

Now when I switch to PC mode, the PC boots up to a "Non System Disk" message, which is expected since there's nothing on the virtual drive file.

I then inserted the DOS 6.2.2 install floppy disks. But the "PC" does not see the floppy disks. I aslo tried to insert the DOS floppy disks before lauching the "PC" and it made no diference. (Mac sees and mounts the floppy disk just fine).

So, the question is: how do I install DOS on this thing? What am I missing?

Thanks

i dont remember, does dos 6 support 32 bit partitions? if not you may be limited to 2 gig's each

(or using win-dos or pc dos 7)

It turned out be a flaky floppy drive. I got it fixed and now I am running DOS 6.22, Windows for Workgroup 3.11 and Windows 95 all on the Peforma, side by side with System 7.6.1

That Intel 486 DX 2 processor is awesome. And Windows 95 kicks ass.

By the way, it had nothing to do with partition size, as you are only allowed to create a virtual drive file no larger than 1 gig, as dictated by "PC Set Up" in Control Panel. And you install DOS/Windows onto that vhd file.

Now I can't put the front bezel back on! This really bugs me! The stupid plastic tab has nowhere to go but to cut into the hdd power cable, it's gonna cut the power cable if I press too hard I'm afraid...

Is the HDD on the sled? If it is, try putting it in without the sled. It might be an odd-dimensions hard drive, therefore it sticks out a bit. Not every HDD was made to fit into a mac ;)

Yes, the hdd is on the sled. But I resolved the issue by breaking off the plastic tab. So the front bezel is back on, hooked on by the remaining plastic tab on the left side. Not elegant, but it works. 8-o
