6100/60 build

I got a 6100/60 for a reasonable price coming. I’ll be doing a full recap on both the motherboard and psu. I’ve sourced overclocking crystals. I already ordered 256mb of 60ns FPM ram. I’ve got my eye out for some cache as well. Looks like 256k is all I can get. I’m also keeping my eyes open for a cheap graphics card.

So here I am, about to document the recap and other things. But I find myself wanting to do a SCSI to SD adapter. While I wait on the computer and parts, does anyone have a recommendation for a specific SCSI-SD adapter for the 6100?

I recommend the ZuluSCSI over the blueSCSI.

The original blueSCSI had a number of serious design flaws, which by luck seem to result in them failing, rather than killing the computer. They also don't play nice in some setups.

The v2 looks better, but the v1 leaves me unconfident in the product.

On the other hand, zuluSCSI has a good record.

I second the recommendation for a ZuluSCSI instead of a BlueSCSI. The price difference is minimal.

Bear in mind the 601 CPU is fragile in these, it's common for them to crack if mishandled - do not hold/carry the logicboard by the heatsink, only grab/hold/carry by the edges of the logicboard! Be extremely careful if you are going to remove the heatsink and renew the thermal paste.

The 601 also runs hot - the 6100 doesn't have very good cooling, it relies on the fan in the power supply, on the opposite side of the CPU. If you end up putting a PDS card or G3 accelerator or DOS card in your 6100, it will run even warmer. Some people add another fan, I think @Trash80toHP_Mini has done this before.

This is unsurprising, as BlueSCSI v2 really just is a reimplementation of ZuluSCSI RP2040, the latter of which avoided many poor hardware choices made in the design of BSCSI v1.

Yeah the new BlueSCSI is basically a damn near uncredited clone of the ZuluSCSI. A rather questionable project, that one.

A re-implementation of the ZuluSCSI? You mean they stole someone else's design? Another reason to get a ZuluSCSI.

From the official site and the official announcement at https://bluescsi.com/v2:

BlueSCSI v2 is based on the Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller and a fork of ZuluSCSI's SCSI2SD code
+
BlueSCSI v2 targets the Raspberry Pi Pico (not the Pi) which uses the RP2040 microcontroller. Like before we're building on the shoulders of those who came before us - namely this code base is based on the ZuluSCSI's SCSI2SD.
How are they disguising anything?

Sigh. To be honest, they're all more than I can justify spending, so I'll just keep using the cheap spinning disks I've horded. Yes they'll die one day, but for now they work and I'm not doing critical work with them.

Trivial commits, refactoring, to disguise the fact that actually the bluescsi contributors who they have put at the top of the copyright statements haven't actually done anything useful whatsoever. Less a fork, more a straight rip-off.

Let's not turn this thread into another BlueSCSI/AZuluSCSI dramafest. OP can probably decide with the given information which emulator fits them and their 6100 best.

BlueSCSI v2 - performs so well in my 6100/66 DOS, its approx 2.5x faster than spinner HDD. Never liked 6100 due its performance of the spinner.
Cheers

My 6100 with BlueSCSI V2 works well! Though I have a Sonnet CPU upgrade as well as a PDS VRAM card, and I also feel that cooling is an issue like others here have mentioned.
