400K floppies & My Q605 - Solved!

My Quadra 605 boots System 7.5.5 and 8.1. Went to make a 400k disk and found out while I can *READ* them I can not *CREATE* them (ie format them). I know I can make 400k floppies from an image but I want to make custom 400k disks with various files on them for my 128k Mac. Crap. Thought I mght have to set up a 6.0.8 machine just to make 400k floppies. Decided to do a bit of research before dragging out a 6.0.8 box. I found this Apple note:

Humm. It says I can create a MFM volume under System 7.1. The Quadra 605 can run System 7.1 with the proper System Enabler.

So I went to my junk box and found a spare Quatum SCSI hard drive. I had no idea what size it was so I just set it to SCSI ID 4 and put it in my SCSI tower. Turns out it is an 80mb drive. Plenty of room for 7.1 I deleted the system folder on it and installed System 7.1 on it. Put System Enable 065 ver 1.2 in the System folder. Set it as the start up disk and did a reboot.

It booted up just fine and I was able to format a floppy as a 400K disk and drag files to it. Problem solved!

So now my Q605 boots 7.1, 7.5.5, and OS 8.1.

Ill have to see but my G3 can make 800 k disks, I thought it could do 400 with system 7.5 but ill give it a whirl. Wait my color classic has 7.5 (not updated) and it makes 400k disks. I also use both disk copy 4.2 and 6.3 on it for disk images.

The OS likely can't alter/add/delete files on the file system used on 400k disks. DIsk imagers like DART and Disk Copy do a raw block copy of the image data onto the disk and wouldn't be effected.
