Hi folks....

I am running OS 7.6 (soon to be 7.6.1) on my Color Classic II.

What browsers can you recommend to me? I have about 35 MBs of RAM.

I hope to install a older OS, like OS 7.1 to 7.5 something on my second partition.  Can someone recommend a browser for that OS?

Thanks in advance.

WannaBe, MacWWW, netscape, iCab, Internet Explorer.

With a CCII (LC 550), all of those should run fine. It's mostly personal preference. Some of those browsers have Javascript, which can make *some* things work, but a lot of things nowadays rely on features that were never present in those early javascript versions, and thow lots of javascript errors. It might have worked for JS in 2003, but now I find it better to browse without Javascript.

Thanks for your help.

I am currently running Netscape 2.02.  I upgraded to Netscape 3.04.  I believe that is the last version of Netscape I can run under 7.6 and a 68030 processor.

I have not tried Internet Explorer.  Can you recommend a version to me?

I did down load (from a German web site) iCab for 68K machines.  But when I extracted the file, it said this copy has expired.  It said that if I wanted to buy it, I had to pay $27.00 (I think that was the amount).  I don't mind paying for it, but I would like to try it to see if it works first.  Can I down load a version to test before I buy?  I thought iCab was not supported any more.  Is it?

I have not tried WannaBe or MacWWW.  I will look for them.  In the end I want to install three or maybe four browsers in 7.6, that I could choose from.

I tried to go to macintoshgarden, but I received so many error messages with Netscape 2.02 and Netscape 3.04 that I gave up.  Maybe I need a 68040 machine???
Thank you for all the good tips!

You can run Netscape 4.08, but it is rather slow and comes with a lot of bloatware.

If you want to download a browser straight from your Color Classic, I am sure this page will work in older browsers: http://main.system7today.com/otherbrowsers.html

As to Macintosh Garden, I don't think you can download files from there on a 68k browser. Use a modern machine, and put the file on an FTP server from which you can then download it from your vintage Mac. I use www.drivehq.com.

I took a look at the free ftp server at drivehq.com.  I would even be willing to pay them for better service if need be.
Would it be possible to, say surf the interent in my 64 bit windows 10 computer, find the file I need, then move it to drivehq.com? Then ftp it using my 68K Color Classic?  Which 68K ftp client do you use? I will be using 7.6.1 OS.  I have a Color Classic II with about 35 MBs of memory.
Great tip! Thanks!

Yes, that's what I do. I use Fetch, but you might be able to connect to the FTP server with Netscape if you don't want to use a dedicated client.
