SCSI Ultra 3 for older Mac

Yes. SCSI drives are normally designed to be backwards compatible with all the older standards. I have never encountered one that wouldn't work with an adapter.

    Welcome back!

How many times I see this line but never understand it. Inefficient and lacking in standard features yes, that's obvious. Buggy, not so much. I haven't run into bugs in a long time and the times I do it's a mod that's been added, not the original software. As for security, I'd trust 2 more than...

    Welcome back!

I've never liked phpBB3, but whatever lol.

My 40/80/160 Mb SCSI Hard disk are all dying.

http://www.mars-tech.com/aec-7720u.htm These things go for cheap on eBay all the time. No Mac ever had built-in ultra-wide (68-pin). Wide SCSI wasn't even out till 1994. An ultra scsi (50-pin) adapter should work just fine though, the Mac will simply run it at the old SCSI-1/2 speeds instead of...

    4 MB Level 2 cache

4MB would probably give some improvement but not likely enough to be worth it. There were a couple 2MB cache DIMMs made way back but it never went from there because the performance gain wasn't big and they cost way too much. One of the problems was the cache didn't run anywhere close to CPU...

Maximum Weight of a monitor on top of a IIvx/650 style case?

I personally wouldn't put any CRT larger than 19" on top of any Mac case, even if it could technically support something heavier. If it's an aperture grill like Sony's Trinitron design I wouldn't go over 17" since they're heavier than other CRTs.

    Maxing out the 9500

Not that I know of. You can look up the details on Strangedogs plus almost anything else you'd want to know about flashing. From what I can recall, something about how the Nvidia cards interface with the system isn't compatible with old world. They'll be fine in a B&W G3 but anything older...

    Maxing out the 9500

They got those Nvidia cards working in Old World? When I last checked all that, some could be flashed for Mac but due to the way the hardware works it won't function in the pre-G3 systems.

    NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

This sounds like a problem I ran into with the Radeon 9200 in OS 8/9. It happened when I reset PRAM or significantly changed configurations. No video would come up and I never figured out why. Try starting up and just let it run for a few minutes, that should be enough to complete the boot...

    Unknown slot in some Macs?

They're PDS slots and in most cases each model was different. IIci has a cache card that can go in it and quite a few CPU upgrades that were made for it, including a couple 601 PowerPC upgrades. IIcx and IIx should be able to take some CPU upgrades as well. I believe the slots are the same...

    9600 Graphics card

Macintosh Radeon 9200 is the last and most powerful overall that can run in a 9600. Below that comes the Radeon Mac Edition (7200) or the Voodoo series. 7000 can be hacked to run in Mac but performance isn't even on par with the Mac Radeon. And if you need more VRAM, 9200 has double what 7000...

SE fan troubles and an unknown brown substance

Ah, that's what I was looking for. It's been quite a while since I worked inside something with a CRT.

SE fan troubles and an unknown brown substance

That would be the flyback transformer. It handles the high voltages needed for the screen. The brown stuff looks like a glue or sealant that's broken down due to age/heat. Unless someone else has suggestions, I'd say just leave it be if you aren't having trouble with the screen.

    Hee-hee, no X for you!

10.2 is workable in that amount but 10.3 and up won't be. A barebones install of later versions chews up that much RAM all by itself, much less running any other applications.

Whitening a yellowed IICI: first step.

True, though I personally haven't seen any problems in normal use. Seems as strong as it was before. I also have never soaked anything, just a spraying over the outside. Sadly everything I've ever come across or thought up myself for a gentler process still involved abrasives that remove...

Whitening a yellowed IICI: first step.

I don't have the link any more but there was a nice article and discussion somewhere about the Super Nintendos yellowing and the conclusion was it had to do with how well the plastic was mixed with the flame retardants and what sort of fillers might be used. Exposure to open air/UV/etc...

    Fuzzy SE/30 screen

Aging CRTs can tend to be fuzzy for as much as a couple minutes before they settle into proper focus. If it's giving an otherwise ok image that just seems out of focus, a little adjustment on the focus controls should clear it up nicely. If it seems smeared/blurred and the focus adjustments...

    Is this really possible?

I guess the only risk is the -12V line and you will know if it's causing a problem before any damage is done if it reacts by making the motor run constantly. I used a superdrive in a Plus for a while and had no problems, functioned just like a normal 800k drive.

    Freecycle Haul!!

I actually think it has to do with the fact most people don't think old computers are useful. A 15-year-old TV is still "good", all it has to do is display a decent image and people are happy. What would anyone do with a 15-year-old computer though? We may have the answers but many people have...
