Fuzzy SE/30 screen

Somebody was telling me about a SE/30 he was going to send me and he said the screen was fuzzy. Is that a problem with the CRT or bad caps on the motherboard?

Also if it is the CRT what other models could I snag a screen from?

"Fuzziness" is too...fuzzy a term to say for sure. A lack of focus can be caused by anything from poor adjustment of the focus circuitry, to a misbehaving high-voltage supply, to a worn out CRT. Without more data, you can't say which of these (if any) is the problem.

If it does turn out to be the CRT (rare, in my experience), then you can use a CRT from any of the compacts.

I had this problem on my SE/30 too when I got it but adjusting the manual focus varibale resistor inside pretty much sorted it. It is still a bit fuzzy on startup but it goes away after a couple of minutes once everything has warmed up.

Aging CRTs can tend to be fuzzy for as much as a couple minutes before they settle into proper focus. If it's giving an otherwise ok image that just seems out of focus, a little adjustment on the focus controls should clear it up nicely. If it seems smeared/blurred and the focus adjustments don't fix things then you have some other problem.
