How hot should old 50-pin SCSI drives be?

I have an old Seagate barracuda full height drive that I just loaded system 7.5 on. It's really warm to the touch. My question is, how warm should these things get? Is it a sign of imminent failure?

Mine ran hot and noisy for over a decade. Hot enough that you wouldn't want to touch it while running for an extended period. I ended up installing a fan in its case to try to cool it down a bit.

If you are referring to those full height full width 9.1GB 50 pin server drives, someone in the Dealchat forum around the turn of the century described them as “fire-breathing.”
