I did know about the Plus analog board having a live heat sink but I wasn’t aware it’s still the case in modern PSUs too.

This kind of thing is why there are stickers on enclosed PSUs telling you not to take the enclosure off, and why you should always assume that anything could be live inside the PSU. Random bits of board-attached metalwork may be required, by the design of the PSU, to be live.

In any case, I guess OP should assume the worst when it comes to that power supply - I get the feeling it hasn’t been powered up for a long time.

I mean, yeah, but it's a relatively small PSU so probably the worst it'll do is catch fire. If I were OP I'd be inclined to power it up attached to a non-computer load on the end of an extension lead so I can turn it off if it does catch fire. I think you might be slightly over-worrying here.

i've seen people make these into desktops, i believe. i know i've seen people do it with imac boards and eMac boards. if my classic's analog assembly ever blows up i will have the perfect opportunity to make the worst macintosh LC ever. lol
btw, applefritter still has a lot of old blog posts about modifications, they're a time capsule from a bygone era where most people would have considered macs like SE/30's... worthless.

Some people hated the compact Mac obviously. These are 512k boards with a homebrew VGA adaptor in an old PC type case. I haven't tested them yet. Pull apart and clean/inspect then see what happens.

What case is that? It looks to be me like a C128D case.

oh, neat! how'd you get it to work? also i say the worst LC because it's a 68000, and the classic II is pretty much identical to an LC II.

Its powered using an ATX4VC connected to a PicoPSU and a 12V DC power supply. Video output is handled by RGBtoHDMI. There's probably cheaper ways of doing it but this way required the least amount of effort.

I think you might be slightly over-worrying here.

Most likely. I am still haunted by exploding Delta and Astec power supplies.

And yes, I did take the 8200’s act of exploding as a direct personal attack

I've done a bit more exploring. I've pulled one apart and the power supply works (yes I am aware that they can bite). Had a good look at the 512k board and it looks good, next I'll give it a good clean up and test. The cases are very basic but I think I'll retro and tidy up and reassemble into the case. The floppy drives are 400k and need a good bit of work. Probably change ROMS and put 800K drive into the case. All good fun and at least worth preserving a CAT Mac I think
