Quietest SCSI Hard drive

I have a PCI SATA Hard Card, regular PCI SATA card, and ZuluSCSI. But I do want to run a 50-pin SCSI HD, too. The only one I have now is a 2GB Quantum Fireball. However, it is way too loud for me. It could be because it's old, but it works fine. Are there quieter SCSI drives?

I find that some of the later server drives (U320 with the 80-pin SCA socket) are relatively quiet. They have a quite hefty power draw though. Many of them are LVD/SE and you should be able to run them from a 50-pin SCSI port. I had one in my Performa 475 for some years until the PSU went.

The Quantum XP43400 is incredibly quiet, I almost forget it’s on. Expensive though used, dunno why. The second quietest drive I have, and have a few, is the Seagate Medalist SL drive, the ST51080N.
both are very reliable in my experience.

just want to confirm if thats the model number, as theres an XP34300W on eBay thats somewhat cheap. But yeah those prices I'm seeing on Quantum XP in general are pretty crazy

Yeah that’s the model number, but I think the W is for the 68pin wide model. I’ve looked it up and it does appear to be the same drive…. I have the 50 pin narrow scsi model

They were use din a lot of IBM machines…. Once I get home I’ll take a pic of mine.

I'm gradually moving over to SCSI emulators now, despite my fondness for spinning drives they keep failing on me and I just feel it's a losing battle.

I hear you. All the machines that have spin drives are the ones I fire up once or twice a year. And I have an image of those drives. The rest have either a blu/zulu or whatever SCSI to SD or for ide, solid state of eny kind.

I still run a 4GB Quantum Fireball ST in my Macintosh SE/30, but I set up my recently restored IIci with a Zulu. When the SE/30's drive fails, I'll go solid state at that point.

I've installed a piezo buzzer on the Zulu, and it makes me more comfortable with it.
