I have a slot-loading SCSI Pioneer DVD-ROM connected to my Performa 475. I'll see if I can get it to work under System 7 tonight and if that works, I can send you the relevant extensions by e-mail.

That ancient Pioneer likely doesn't support reading CDs at all. They were expensive and exotic DVD authoring recorders when new, support for CDs wasn't a priority and the early DVD only read/write laser pickups were pretty bulky. "Combo" drives that could also read and write CDs came later in DVD-R's life.

Oh I was only emotional thinking my drive is defective when in fact it is mint condition and nothing wrong with it. Plus, I find it hot to know it is literally designed to read only DVD
However, I will go with yes ut..your universal apple cd extension will not help me if it does not work with pioneer dvr-S201 though. I am wondering..is there like super universal..super basic driver out there such enough for the mac to see the device and talk to it and nothing else that will accept literally any scsi cd/dvd on Earth? That is what I am wondering up. When you say Apple CD extensions and CD sunrises is that universal enough that it will work in my model or not? It is truly an ultimate shame if I have to get another scsi drive when this here is beautifully functioning.But again...if I have no other choice...I will do it.....but I will be highly disappointed.

I have just been doing some testing.
I installed FWB's CD-ROM Toolkit onto Mac OS 8.6 on my Beige G3. I copied the installed files onto a zip disk and tried it on System 7.1.1 on my Performa 475. I copied the CD-ROM Toolkit Extension (v4.0.1) and the Apple CD/DVD Driver (v1.2.2) into the Extensions folder, SCSI Probe 4.3 into the Control Panels folder and the CD drive files that come with the CD-ROM Toolkit into the System Folder.
Restart and It works.
The CDs in the slot-loading Pioneer DVD-ROM drive and in the Yamaha CRW8824S are both recognised under System 7.1.
When the CD is not in the mac during boot-up, I need SCSI Probe 4.3 to mount it. I can boot too from the Mac OS 7.6.1 installer CD in the Pioneer DVD drive.
If you can't use your Pioneer DVR drive, that's a shame. The advice given above is good. Get your a good external SCSI drive, or even a good internal drive and a SCSI enclosure. Yamaha, Plextor, Pioneer amongst others had good reputations then although I would expect that any SCSI drive from before 2001-ish will. I personally prefer the Yamaha CD-burners but whether a burner would be of any use to you is for you to decide.
Shall I put all of the files in question into a StuffIt 4 sea (self-extracting archive) or sit (ordinary archive) for you? I can put it onto the Macintosh Garden or e-mail it to you directly. If you'd prefer the latter, please PM me an e-mail address.

K! Then it is set! This awesome pioner dvdr I have now will be officially for only my Amiga and nothing else. Right now I am using it exclusive as white noise machine so it is fulfilling it's purpose as I am having good night sleep through it and that is enough for me. As for the cd thing..I will go the route with the original Apple CD 600e scsi then and I will use that for my Mac LC III. I will PM you my email address. When you send me the driver, is it possible you could attach step by step instructions in how to properly install it in the readme.txt file? One final question. Ones I receive the driver and I install it correctly will the Apple CD 600e scsi work immediately in plug and play? Thanks in advance.

I posted a bit too rashly here — youthful exuberance, I'm afraid. I tested it again over the weekend and the presence of the (PowerPC) CD-ROM Toolkit v4 had no effect on the mounting of the Mac OS 7.6.1 installer under System 7.1 on my P475. SCSI Probe 4.3 or SilverLining d2 were able to mount the CD without the extensions being present. The drive in question was the Pioneer.

That is ok. The apple Cd 300e solved my problem ones and for good (ones it arrives). Even if I cannot use the pioneer in my amiga and my pc have no sci adaptor...it is doing something very important for me....
WHITE NOISE!! the sound of that fan...........aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah I am in love...the loud hummmmmmming sound it makes...is so satisfying. Also there is something about the fact it can only read dvd...- fans face - that is so hot, hot, hot, hot, hot....I do not know why I like that O_O. Also...the fact it have blinking LED if there is an error it blinks three times fast or blinks 2 times fast and repeats if there is an invalid cd format or..whatever...THAT MAKES ME WANT TO KEEP IT WITH ME UNTIL THE DAY I die. I find this pioneer dvd-r a master piece...an art...a very high quality dvd player...and burner better than my blue ray burner for some apparent reason. Next month, I am going to buy a scsi adaptor for my PC and hook it directly to my PC and make it the primary dvd player and burner.
