LocalTalk to Ethertalk?

I thought I could connect my localtalk-only machines to my netatalk Appleshare server with just a LocalTalk Bridge (Asante).

I just got my bridge, hooked it up to my ethernet network and to a couple of localtalked Pluses. I'm using the original Apple localtalk adapters and cables. Neither of these Pluses can see my Appleshare volume via the Chooser.

I have a Quadra with a direct ethernet connection (AAUI) on the same switch, it can see the Netatalk server- and this Quadra is not configured for tcp/ip- so I know the Netatalk is sending Ethertalk TCP frames on my network.

I thought the bridge would translate all the localtalk over to Ethertalk and vice-versa.

Or could it be just old versions of Appleshare client on the Pluses? They both have 6.x whereas the Quadra is 7.5.

I thought I did this years ago and it just worked... but I have nothing this time.

The Asante Bridge is brandnew, and I can see it passing traffic back and forth via the lights on the unit.

If it is an AsanteTalk, you must power on the bridge after the netatalk server is fully loaded. A stock netatalk 2.2.4 build may still have problems. I have read that some patched were needed to have it work reliably with Asante hardware. Another option is to install the Localtalk bridge extension on the Quadra and use that machine as a bridge.

I read around and build and deployed 2.1.6, since that was known working. I'll check my settings and try and tweak it. Thx for the tip on rebooting the Asante.

While it is Apple II centric, I have had great luck with the A2Server build of netatalk 2.2.4. Works great on my 68k Macs on both Ethernet and Localtalk segments, and it even netboots my Apple IIs!

You'd need TCP/IP on System 6 to see the whole network and its services. That would be a minimum of 6.07 or System 7.1. Without it, you will only see AppleTalk Services and nothing else. Not even printers unless they are AppleTalk printers.

There were updates available for the System 6 Appleshare client in the System 7 era (e.g., for accessing Appleshare 4 servers), so you might see if you do or don't have the most up to date client on the Pluses.

My experience after some years of trying to network old and new is that the most interesting and the most robust of all the bridges is the Apple Internet Router, which is rock solid and runs on an 030-040 machine. Gives life to such a machine, too.

Having said that, I am currently using one of those little white Asante boxes, as it needs to run 24/7/365. But even here, the order in which things get started matters with the thing, and I am not running netatalk.

Right- I'm only interested in using my Appleshare Volume on my netatalk to move software around. I am not interested in TCP/IP.

The netatalk server should be putting Ethertalk frames on the ethernet network, which the Asante Bridge should see and bridge over to Localtalk. 

I can see my Appleshare volume now with both my Quadra and my SE using their on-board ethernet, so I know it's working... it just won't go over this bridge into Localtalk land. And as I remember there shouldn't be anything I need to do on the server side- this Asante MicroPrint bridge should be doing the work for me.

Next I'll check these local talk adapters and try some phone net adapters that I also have.

Yeah, that may be it. Of course, when dealing with these pluses now I have to go into the land of 800k floppies.

But using the SE (which has ethernet on board via the Asante card) I have verified that my appleshare setup is ok using netatalk- that is, I can see and mount the volume. I've used a fresh install of 6.0.8 that I did myself, adding the network drives for the Asante and then copying over Appleshare from a 7.5 install (which is the latest version to use back with 6.0.8 as far as I can tell from reading sites.

I'll continue to play with this till I get it. It's a brand new from the box Asante Microprint, so I'm sure it's not an issue with that bridge.

There is no need to upgrade the AppleShare Client in System 6, but it is a pretty good idea. The proper one to use is AppleShare WS 3.5.

Netatalk is a touchy subject. Version 2.2 introduced a number of changes, many which I would like to use -- security, better handling of newer machines with OS X, and other things. However, 2.1.6 just *works* so I use that.

I have gotten a 512K (could have been a 512Ke) with System 3.3/Finder 5.4 and AppleShare 1.1 linked up to OS X Jaguar, Netatalk 2.1.6 and 2.2.4. I got build errors when compling with the --enable-zeroconf option.

ok thx for the advise and confirmation. I'm using 2.1.6 on 10.04 Ubuntu Server, and it built just fine.

I'll track this down soon. I'm making the 800kb Floppy install of 6.0.8 so I can test for sure on one of these Pluses. They have a lot of nice 6.x software that I want to grab from them, and I don't feel like using sneaker net.

UGH An aside- I was fighting for a day with this SE and it's Asante ethernet board till I realized the switch on daughter card was on "THN" -- and I'd been using a Thick-to-10bt transiver. A flick to "THK" and it works fine on that. The localtalk bridge to my new Pluses and Classic is still the issue.

OK - this was anticlimatic. I made 6.0.8 on 800K floppies on my Quadra. I installed 6.0.8 on the Plus (it had 6.0.7). Rebooted. I saw my netatalk Appleshare volume right away. So who knows what was on there before.

Now just to install this on the other plus and the classic.
