onboard-based vram and re changing the amount

Recommended Posts

sorry if the title was a little vague but I'm not sure how to word it in one simple short line...

so my question [unless its already been covered in the past] was is the onboard vram amount capped by the controller itself and/or simply by physical means alone?

like for example, I mean an ati-featured board that had 1MB of easily-spotted chips onboard - could one then had done a bit of soldering to 'swap in' pins-compatible 2MB instead?

I know theres always a limit to how much one can try modify existing designs (notwithstanding the cpu cards themselves as well) but I just had to get curious about vram theories this night tho :)
