In my router there is a range of IP addresses assigned to DHCP and that's from to  If I manually assign an IP address to a device on the network, it is outside of that range, meaning 192.168.100 to (do not use 255).  I do this to keep a service like a printer or an FTP server at a fixed location because under DHCP if I restart the router, the assigned IP addresses could change.  


    Also, as a clarification, my Asante EN/SC ethernet box is connected to an Asante FriendlyNet 10baseT Hub.  That in turn connects to a Linksys/Cisco 100/1000baseT switch which through a wireless extender connects to the Cable modem router in the living room.  If you have a 10baseT hub, try plugging your cable into the uplink port instead of a regular port and see if you get a link light.  This is a crossover port so the transmit and receive pairs are reversed.  I believe your router ports should be auto-sensing so it will figure out the connection automatically to your hub.


    I looked at what you entered for DNS servers in the Mac, the last octet of second DNS IP address should be 18, not 181.  Your first DNS address is correct so that shouldn't cause you an issues but something I noticed.

Sounds like you MIGHT have a similar problem to the one I had with my LC475.  Since I have a Apple IIe card in the internal slot, I connected an Asante EN/SC external ethernet box that sits in the SCSI chain.  But I couldn't get it to work, very frustrating.  Then I tried a null ethernet cable and it worked like a champ (and yes the other end is plugged into a router).  There are plugs available the will flip the transmit and receive pairs on Amazon.  That's what I used to fix my problem.  I'm running 7.5.5 with OpenTransport 1.1.2.

  3. Thanks olePigeon and good luck with your Iici.  Using an SD card for the system drive is dead quiet but speed is limited by the SCSI bus.  My focus was making my SE/30 as fast as possible.


    Blougram, according to my document, Mode32 is run to remove it from the system disk if it's installed.  Originally when I bought my SE/30 it was running OS 7.5.5 with Mode32 on it's HD.  After installing the new ROM SIMM and SCSI2SD I decided to do a full, fresh install.  I had problems booting floppies or EMU Floppy images made with 7.5.3 with the new ROM-inator II installed so I did a clean install as the OS must be patched as each OS update is applied.  This document is on the BMOW website under archives and called Mac SE/30 with Upgraded ROM.  It will be interesting to see if you can boot after you remove Mode32 and patch the system file in the System folder.  I see no reason why it shouldn't work but I suggest you do a backup just in case something weird happens.

Good Morning All, I have completed the upgrades to my SE/30 and I thought I'd share my experience.  I replaced the system HD with a 16 GB SCSI2SD divided into 5 partitions.  The first one I kept down to 2 GBs for compatibility, three more sized at 4 GBs, and the final leftover is 718 MBs.  The ROM-inator II has a compressed ROM disk using OS 7.1 but I ran into problems using the Apple HD SC Setup program 7.5.3 as it wouldn't run under 7.1.  Also the OS 7.5.3 install disks wouldn't boot with the clean ROM installed; it would freeze at the welcome screen (but it booted fine with the original ROM).  Since I have a SCSI2SD in my LC475 and it can boot it into 7.5.5 from an external drive, I used it to partition the 16 GB SD card.  It worked fine which then allowed me to start on the OS install in the SE/30.


    The OS install/patch procedure for the SE/30 is required as it looks at the gestalt ID and the OS 7.5.3/7.5.5 installations will fail if it doesn't get the expected results.  The clean ROM usually comes from the ROM-inator II SIMM or a borrowed IIsi or IIfx SIMMs.  This allows the SE/30 to run in true 32-bit mode instead of 24-bit mode and access more RAM.  In my case this SE/30 has 128 MBs.  The procedure refers to first installing OS 7.0.1 and 7.1 as they don't conflict with a clean ROM.  As it turned out that was unnecessary.  I could boot from the ROM-inator II's ROM disk and run the 7.5.3 installation from disk (or EMU Floppy) which did work and I performed an Easy and Clean install.  Then reboot into the ROM disk and run ResEdit 2.1.3 to edit the System 7.5 Update and System file in the System Folder.  I found System Picker 1.1a3 and Mode 32 v7.5 to not be required.


    Afterwards, I installed the OS 7.5.5 update and patched it successfully.  Finally, I added the updates for building a modern System 7.5.5.  So the SE/30 works great and working the way I want it.  If any further details are needed please let me know.


    I do have a question but I'l post that separately as it's on an unrelated subject.

  5. Thank you for your responses.  When I bought the SE/30 a couple of years ago, the motherboard caps had already been replaced, but that apparently didn't include the power supply.


    I'm using the model A Floppy EMU in floppy mode to boot the SE/30.  I've been exchanging emails with Steve Chamberlin of Big Mess O Wires trying to figure out why I can't boot my LC475 from my model A Floppy EMU.  When I disconnect the SCSI2SD system drive and the external SCSI devices, that Mac comes up with a 3.5 floppy icon on the screen with an X on it.  Steve thought it might be a corrupted image but the Disk First Aid tool on the SE/30 reports the image is good.  To help troubleshoot I'm also am trying to boot the SE/30 from the Floppy EMU (in floppy mode) but it does the same thing and skips the EMU and boots from the HD.  That's why i was asking about booting from an external floppy.  On Apple IIs, you can only boot on the first drive assigned to a slot and I didn't know if Macs had the same restriction.


    I actually have to complete model As and both units do the same thing with their own respective images.  I recently purchased a couple of model B Floppy EMUs and I guess I'm going to have to re-flash one over to the Mac firmware and see if it will work then.


    Very Confusing. Thanks for any suggestions.  Given Steve's confusion as to why it doesn't work I suspect I'm doing something wrong but I just don't know what yet.

Hello everyone.  I got my SE/30 up and running yesterday.  I brought it out of storage last week to replace the dirty ROM with a clean one from bigmessowires but the CRT display would blink on and off.  I left it on for a while and it eventually stopped that, but it tried to boot but hung.  Then after that every power cycle it would give me nothing but black and white horizontal lines on the CRT.  Suspecting a bad power supply, I ordered a replacement and installed it.  No more CRT blinking but just black and white horizontal lines.  According to the Repair Macintosh SE/30 online, I needed to clean connectors.  So I cleaned all the connections on the MB especially the power connector and it woke up and booted like a long lost friend.  I immediately backed up the system drive and have been playing with my Floppy EMUs to see how it acts with the SE/30.


    How do I force the SE/30 to boot from the EMU if it's connected to the external floppy port?


    I eventually intend to replace the system drive with a SCSI2SD v5 and clean boot into 7.5.5.  I wonder if I can figure out how to boot into 8.1?

  7. It was a long process to build these two machines. I owned a IIgs back in the '80s but sold it when I needed room for newer PCs. What got me back into it was the CFFA3000. When I saw what it could do, I immediately ordered two of them (they were available at the time) before I had any real hardware. After that I just kept my eye on eBay and pieced together these two systems. I built the IIGSes that I originally wanted but could not afford and spent way more than $1000 to put these systems together so I could never sell them for that. What you don't see is all the extra hardware I'm no longer using from extra IIgs chassises to memory cards, keyboards, monitors, Ramfast SCSI cards and mice.


    Also my goal was not to build a IIGS that was all original hardware but one that fixed the short comings of the original systems. The original CRT display was too small and after 30 years those displays are failing so being able to drive an LCD flatscreen of any size is wonderful. Just wait until you see a 52" IIgs display. It's great! I hated the original IIgs keyboard so I replaced it with a Mac keyboard. So these two machine are comfortable for me to use.


    Here's a bit of trivia. Remember how we're we're told that the 03 IIGS was faster booting than the 01 because there were less tools to load into RAM? With the TWGS in both machines they now finish pretty much in a dead heat. I'll have to post a video if anyone is interested.

Okay, what's the value of a ROM 01 (or ROM 03, I have both) IIGS with an Uthernet card, an Apple HS SCSI card with CD-ROM drive, a 17 MHz TWGS, Apple II 3.5" drive controller along with two 3.5 1.44 Superdrives, one 3.5 800K drive, two 5.25 floppy drives, a CFFA3000 along with an A2heaven 8MB IIGS memory card.  It also has an upgraded 80W power supply and a Nishida Radio RGB to Component (R-Y,B-Y,Y) which feeds the included 15" flat screen LCD TV. there is also included a joystick.

Hi All, as promised I've been working on speeding up my LC475.  I have two motherboards but one case.  I found the documents online for speeding up an LC475 to 33 or even 40 MHz.  So I ordered the switches, wires, resistors, heat shrink, etc., to add the mod.  I had already purchased a couple of 33 MHz 68040s along with heatsinks as they got pretty hot.  So, I modded the first board successfully and it ran fine at 33 MHz.  My Apple IIe card because a little finicky intermittently reporting an error #4 but a software restart would fix the problem.  


    I was going to perform the same mod on the other MB but I got curious if it would run at 40 MHz.  Modding the second MB to switch between 25 and 40 MHz was even easier than the mod to 33 MHz.  I put the newly moded board in and it ran fine at 25 MHz.  But when switching to 40 MHz the board never did it's pleasing startup chime or boot.  I swapped the 33 MHz 68040 processors but that made no difference.  It was definitely the MB.  So I rewired the mod to switch between 25 and 33 MHz like the first one and it runs fine now at either 25 or 33 MHz.


    So how successful was anyone else on the 40 MHz mod on the LC475?  Prior to giving up on the 40 MHz mod, I was able to boot the LC475 at 40 MHz if I switched from 25 to 40 MHz right after the start up chime.  But I got some strange graphic issues like mouse pointer trails on the desktop and some of the startup screens had a small amount of corruption throughout the picture.  I suspect the higher processor speed was too fast for the 100 ns, 1 MB display RAM.  When I ran the apple personal diagnostics at 25 or 33 MHz it reported the correct speed.  But at 40 MHz it still reported the processor was running at 25 MHz.


    So it's been fun playing with my LC475 but now I need to figure out what to do with it.

Final update on this topic.  With all the shenanigans I've been doing with the SCSI2SD I/F and the LC475, my ProDOS partitions have been copied a lot and the Apple IIe card would no longer boot from them.  After scratching my head a bit, I made copies of the partitions and booted the IIe card from an Apple II Utilities 3.5 disk and formatted the 32 MB ProDOS partition.  Then I deleted everything on the partition except for the PRODOS file and copied everything back except for the PRODOS file and now the Apple IIe card boots from that partition.  So my LC475 appears to be up and running at 100%.


    As a side note, I seen entries reporting that the Mac OS doesn't handle ProDOS files properly.  I've had no issues except not being able to boot from a ProDOS partition after copying files and the above procedure corrects that problem.  If there are other issues that I'm not aware of, I'd love to test them on my system to see if I can duplicate them.  I also have 01 and 03 Apple IIgs(es) that are fully functional so I can test both sides of the equation.


    I'm doing some speed mods to the LC475 motherboards that I will post soon.

I wanted to update this for everyone.  I decided to take a different tack on this issue and work with SCSI drives to see if it would make a difference.  So I ordered a SCSI2SD version 5 and version 6 adapters to see if they would work any better than the backups I was doing before.  Yesterday, I programmed the v6 SCSI2SD card for one SCSI ID (1) and tried to use Drive Setup to partition the 64 GB SD card for four sections.  No matter what I did Drive Setup would fail partitioning the SD card.  Yes I did program the SCSI ID to be a Seagate vender (w/ one space first), the product ID to ST225N (w/ ten spaces first), and the revision to 1.0 (w/ one space after).  It appears version 6 of the SCSI2SD card is not compatible with a Mac LC475.  So I installed the version 5 card and it worked just fine.  Just to note both SCSI2SD cards don't require external power.  They both run fine from the power supplied by the SCSI bus itself.


    Anyway, after partitioning the external SCSI2HD and initializing, I copied OS 7.5.5 over to the new drive and the copied System Directory was blessed!  I tried booting with no problems.  I did the same thing with my OS 8.1 installation and it too copied over and booted with no issues.  I wish I knew what was going on.


    This is so confusing.  Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.  What's the deal?

There is a wrinkle I thought of this morning that I haven't mentioned because I thought it shouldn't matter.  The external SCSI backup HD is less than a gigabyte in size so I don't have any place to put all my copied files locally.  With a IIe card mounted, the LC475 ethernet network connection is through an Asante EN/SC SCSI I/F.  I've set up file sharing through Appleshare with my iMac G3 running 9.2.2 so it's system drive is available to the LC475 and I backed up my files there.  Could this make a difference?  I would think not as Appleshare would mask the type of connection and be transparent to the Finder application.  


    Am I wrong here?

  13. Thanks rickrob, I tried booting from a floppy and used the Startup Disk to select the first partition but it made no difference.  It didn't fix the System Folder.  I haven't tried 'System Picker' yet.


    What I did do was reinstall 7.5.3 from floppy and upgrade to 7.5.5.  The using the "Installing a Modern System 7.5.5" by Tyler Sable posted on the Internet, I updated to Open Transport 1.1.2, installed TCP/IP Networking Tools, QT 4.0.3, Appearance Manager 1.0.3 and Java support.  So, I'm back up and running but this raises a very important question.  How do I back up this OS installation and have it restore properly if copying the files to another partition destroys the System File?


    I just purchased a SCSI2SD V6 card that I want to install in an external SCSI case for backup.  It is presently bootable from the HD so if I need to startup from there.  But how can I protect the System Folder when I migrate from the physical drive to the SD card?


    Any help is greatly appreciated.



  14. Okay, I'm officially pissed.  I thought what I had done was fine but now I appear to have screwed myself so I need some help.  Here's what's going on.


    I replaced the System drive in my LC475 with an SCSI22SD version 5B and a 32GB SD card.  Of course I know I would have to partition the card and since the SCSI2SD card supports 4 separate SCSI IDs, I spread the storage across all 4 IDs of 8GBs each.  It took a while but it worked and I had 12 drives on the desktop (ID 0 had four 2GB (approximately) partitions and two 32MB ProDOS partitions for the Apple IIe card; IDs 1 through 3 had two 4GB partitions each).  I am running OS 7.5.5.


    It worked fine.  But then I decided to add SCSI devices, a CD-ROM, external HD and an Asante EN/SC ethernet adapter and that consumed the rest of my SCSI IDs.  Okay, I have no plans to add more SCSI devices so I'm good.  But then I decide to put in a new SD card and install OS 8.1 and I learn I can have 8GB(?) HFS partitions under this OS.  But that means I will waste SCSI IDs if I build the partitions that big.  The firmware in the SCSI2SD card holds the SCSI ID assignments so I have to reprogram it if I want to change my setup.


    Sooo, I pull the SCSI2SD card out and blow away the other SCSI ID assignments and put the entire SD card under ID 0.  I was wondering if Apple's partitioning software would support so many partitions but, as it turns, out it does.  I copied my MacHD boot partition to two different locations along with whatever was on the other partitions.  I reassign all the storage to ID 0 and made the first partition less than 2GBs in size, built two ProDOS partitions, and added 7 more 4GB partitions.


    I restored the first partition successfully but the 7.5.5 system file is a regular file.  Also during booting, the Mac reports this is a floppy disk installation and pleas perform a full install.  What? That doesn't make sense so since the system file is a plain directory icon, it must be needing a blessing.  So I look up how to bless the system file.  I move the System suitcase and Finder out of the System folder and back in.  No change.  I move these two files from the system folder and put them in the root directory by placing them on the MacHD desktop icon and then move them back to the system file, but still no change.


    So I wasn't sure if perhaps the boot drive partition is too big (it's 1979845.5K).  So I go through a full install of OS 7.5.3 and upgraded to 7.5.5.  The system folder has a little mac icon in it so it now boots properly.


    So what am I doing wrong?  How do I bless my original system folder so it boots like it did before I started screwing around with it?  How do I back up my system drive and restore it to proper working order if I have to restore?  This part of the Mac OS always confused me.


    I still haven't done my OS 8.1 install yet.  What do I need to be aware of when I move this OS over to the new partitioning?

Good Evening all.  Since I have an SCSI2SD with 32GBs of storage on my LC475 to run OS 7.5.5 (with 136 MBs of RAM), I got rambunctious and decided to install OS 8.1 on a new miniSD card and remove the Apple IIe card and put in a Farallon LC ethernet card.  The installation went perfectly and the LC runs well.  For 68k web browsers I downloaded iCab 2.99 and WannaBe 1.0b14 but they are dog slow.  Perhaps I'm spoiled and expect too much from a 68040 processor running at 25 MHz.  I do have Classilla 9.3.3 running on my iMac G3 (1GB of RAM with a 500 MHz G3) under OS 9.2.2 and it's a decent browser but only for PowerPCs.  Any suggestions for a better 68k web browser under 8.1?


    Along the same lines, I also use an FTP client to pull files directly from my Mac Pro.  I've got Anarchie 1.6 on the LC475 and 3.7 on the iMac G3. Version 3.7 has stopped working because the trial period has ended.  Any good and free FTP clients for these old machines?


    Finally, I purchased some LC475 motherboards from eBay.  I'm testing them but I ran into something odd.  Both MBs have the part number 820-0364-A C-1993 but one board has an extra connector slot between the MB mounted RAM and the display memory slots on the right.  I think it's a board for a Quadra 605 but I've found no references to it.  What is that connector?

    1. Remove the hard drive from the computer.
    Place the hard drive inside of a zip top freezer bag. (don't buy a

    cheap bag.)
    Place the wrapped hard drive inside of ANOTHER zip top freezer bag.

    (yes, you need to do this)
    Place the double wrapped hard drive in the coldest part of your

    Leave the hard drive in the freezer for 12 hours at least. You want

    it good and cold! (see figure 2 below)
    Once very chilled, install the hard drive in your computer and

    start pulling off data. Begin with the most valuable data.
    At some point, the hard drive will fail again. When it does, mark

    the last successfully copied data, pull out the hard drive, double wrap

    it again and stick it in the Chill Chest for another 12 hours.
    You may need to do this a number of times to get all the data you

    want, or until the hard drive stops working completely.

If you want to go a completely different route, look for a SCSI2SD adapter as a drive replacement on eBay.  You can partition an miniSD card into multiple drives.  It works great in my LC475 with a 32GB miniSD card.  I installed OS 7.5.5 so I could use the Apple IIe card.  I just installed OS 8.1 on a new miniSD card and it also works great.  So it's an alternative to buying another HD and very price competitive.


    I wonder if putting your original HD in a freezer bag and put it in the freezer to shock the main bearings into rotating and freeing the heads.  I don't know if that will work but when you get it up and spinning, immediately pull all the data off of it.  It may never work again so be careful.

Very Cool!  Thanks for the feedback.  I forgot to ask about the best browser for a 68K Mac.  I have an LC475 with 128 MBs of RAM running 7.5.5 with a 10base-T network connection to the internet.  What's the best browser to use on this machine?  I like this Mac a lot and I love the older GUI but it bogs down pretty quickly even with a full 68040 inside it.  Honestly I'm not holding my breath given it's age but perhaps there's a surprise here.

Good Afternoon everyone.  I have finished upgrading my slot loading iMac G3 DV with a 500 MHz G3, 1 GB of RAM and a 64 GB SD based IDE system drive running 9.2.2.  I have Netscape Communicator 4.77 which chokes on just about any website I go to.  I ran into Classilla 9.3.3 and it works a lot better.


    What is the best browser to use on my configuration with the modern Internet?

Wanted to give a small update.  The EN/SC I/F works fine but if idle for too long it goes to sleep.  I've been pinging the LC475 continously from the Mac Pro and after a while the it just stops responding.  When I turn on file sharing between the LC475 and the iMac G3 the I/F stays up and keeps responding to pings.  Must be a quirk of the Asante EN/SC.

I will add my 2 cents here.  I have an LC475 running a full 68040 processor with OS 7.5.5 and the Apple IIe card is installed.  I can run Apple II software as long as I'm in 24-bit addressing mode.  Since I have 128 MBs of RAM installed, I lose most of it to the OS in 24-bit addressing mode as I just found out today.


    When looking for a Mac to support the Apple IIe card, I too got confused as to what would and wouldn't work.  So I stayed on the conservative side and bought an LC475.  It's a great little 68K Mac but with the Apple IIe card installed, figuring out networking turned into a major hassle.  I was able to get an Asante EN/SC SCSI to Ethernet I/F to work even though their documentation says it not supported.

This is an informational post for anyone thinking about this.  I bought a used slot loading iMac G3 and added RAM to bring it up to 1 Gigabyte and the OS to 9.2.2.  I purchased an IDE I/F card for using an SD memory card instead of a spinning drive.  The original drive was a Maxtor 30 GB HD that was original and even though it worked fine, I wasn't sure how long it would last.  So I tore the bottom of the iMac apart and replaced the HD with the I/F card and a 64 GB SD card.  That's when the fun began.


    Pulling the bottom off the iMac broke the front plastic tabs.  That tuned out not to be a problem as there are screws holding the bottom in place. After removing the RF metal shield, I could access the HD and replace it.  Of course the mounting holes for the IDE I/F card did not match the HD mounting holes so I cut up some cardboard and taped it to the frame with electrical tape.


    Booted the iMac using a OS 9.2.1 CD and started the install.  The installer did NOT see the SD card.  So I pulled everything apart and used the Mac Pro to format the SD card with HFS Extended.  Put it all back together and still did not see the SD card.  Now what?  As a lark, I tried to install 9.2.1 on a different SD card plugged into USB.  That worked so I did a full install.  Now I had 9.2.1 running slowly on the iMac.  The OS still did NOT see the IDE SD card.  RATS!  Now what?


    Perhaps the IDE I/F card is not compatible with the iMac.  I went back to the Maxtor drive and that's when I noticed that there was a little Apple symbol on the drive.  CRAP! Is a blessed Apple drive needed?  I found nothing on the Internet that suggested the iMac system drive need to be blessed by Apple with their custom firmware.  Now what?  So I tore the iMac apart again and dropped in a 160 GB IDE HD and rebooted slowly back into 9.2.1.  The installer did NOT recognize the 160 GB HD.  What's going on?  My hair is getting thinner by the minute as I pulled it out.


    Did some more research on the interwebs and someone mentioned Drive Setup.  AHHH, a clue!  I spent a lot of time with Drive Setup when trying to install OS 7.5.3 on my LC475 when I replaced it's system drive with a SCSISD I/F card.  I ran Drive Setup and sure enough the 160 GB drive showed up as unformatted.  After initializing, it came up on the desktop.  Yeah!!  I wonder if the SD drive would show up?  So I tore the iMac open AGAIN and reinstalled the IDE SD I/F card and booted slowly into 9.2.1.  The SD card showed up in Drive Setup, initialized as a single partition and it works fine.  I installed 9.2.1 and it now zippy boots into 9.2.1.  Thank you, thank you thank you!


    Okay now I'm back in business and it only took 7 hours to go through this.  Since I installed 9.2.1, do I really need to upgrade to 9.2.2?  Do I gain anything?

  23. Thank you EvilCapitalist.  You are right.  I turn on 32-bit addressing and now the largest unused block is 130,655K with the OS taking up only 4,345K.  Of course, I have to run 24-bit addressing to use my Apple IIe card but now I know how to resolve this issue.
