  1. Update! Getting a new adapter was, in fact, the solution. I grabbed a Belkin one; the rotary dial on it looked intriguing: For the record, the multisync settings on it did not work, same as my MacPNP adapter. Setting it to the 1024x768 option also did not work. However setting it to fixed-resolution 640x480 (Rotary position 3, all switches off) worked! And more interestingly, this provided me with more than just that: There we go, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1152x870. Perfect! Not sure why this particular fixed-res setting does this, but I'll take it. Worked great on my Eizo monitor, but to get it on my 1024x768 LCD (Sceptre X5) I did have to turn on switches 5 and 6 (which change the external sync mode). Now I have a happy IIci!
  2. The plot thickens... To clarify, I had gotten this working at 1152x882 on a rather old Eizo LCD with a max resolution of 1600x1200. It seems to support syncing to oddball signals, as it's also the only LCD I have that can sync to my SparcStation (1152x900@67hz). So anyway, as suggested I moved the IIci to my best CRT, a nice Viewsonic that syncs to a lot of signals (including the aforementioned Sparc) and... it didn't even try to sync, just like the other LCDs I had tried! I would have thought it would sync just fine. Took a screenshot while it was sitting there blank and it looks like it was just the same old 1152x882 image. Interestingly, when I plugged it back into the Eizo LCD I had the thought to check the sync information on the monitor... it appears to be picking it up as 1152x882 at 70.8hz Vsync and 64.6khz Hsync. I find that rather weird-- if it's trying to do 70hz, not only should my CRT pick it up since it does at least 75hz fine, I'd expect it to be an "exact" 70hz, not 70.8hz... (Also interesting to note, this monitor has dual VGA inputs and on the other input I have a normal PC, and the video card reports via DDC that the monitor cannot accept anything but 60hz!). I also found a slightly newer RadiusWare version and tried installing that, no difference. Also looked at the two 1152x882 options (19" and 21") to see if they had different Vsync values, but they are identical. At this point, I am convinced the VGA adapter is doing something weird to the signal, so I am going to try getting a different type and see what happens. This seems odd though, as this adapter works 100% fine on my Quadra 800, Power Mac 6100 and 7500, which I have used it on in the past. I'm able to pick any available resolutions on those. So maybe the MacPNP and the Radius interact with each other in a way that causes issues.
  3. Hate to double post, but I can't edit the last post any more. Just wanted to report that after PRAM zaps didn't work, I decided to go more extreme and pulled the PRAM battery overnight. Unfortunately, it still thinks I have a Radius Two-Page with the same available resolutions. Maybe it's the VGA adapter in particular. I may buy a different one and see what that does. But in the meantime if anyone has other ideas, I'm open to them!
  4. I have the docs. I have tried those settings you listed as well as the "plug and play" option (1,2,6,8 ) which it says works under 7.6.1. I have zapped the PRAM several times (was trying that when I first got it and couldn't get a picture on the 1024x768 monitor I planned to use). I suppose it won't hurt to try again though now that I have it plugged into something workable and have an OS installed...
  5. The IIci I recently picked up has a Radius PrecisionColor 8-24X installed for a graphics card. I am using a VGA adapter (Griffin MacPNP) as I no longer have any working Apple DB15 monitors. With or without RadiusWare installed, I can only choose 1152x882, or 1056x807 (WTF?). It believes I am using a Radius Two-Page Display and will not let me choose a different monitor type. I have tried all available jumper configurations for the adapter and it does not change anything, and this setting persists over OS installs (I have tried 7.1, 7.5.3, and 7.6.1) so I believe that this monitor setting may be stored by the card. Plugging into different monitors also does not change anything. Any monitor that cannot run at 1152x882 does not even attempt to sync with the signal (not even an "out of range" message... just "no signal"). Attached is a screenshot of what I am seeing in the control panel. I see that it mentions being able to use T or U to reconfigure the card. I don't have a manual to refer to for more details though, so I have no idea how to do it! I figured I'd try holding those keys at boot but nothing happens. Does anyone have any experience with these that could help me get some more resolution choices? I was hoping to run this with a monitor that tops out at 1024x768, which is still quite nice for a IIci.

    Those Sparcs are a pain to get booting on CD. I have a Sparcstation 10 and had the same errors... what it didn't like was the termination on my SCSI CD-ROM. That would even kill the hard drive booting (same on my SGI Indy). Unfortunately, no combination of external terminators or in-line ones could solve the issue... had to use a completely different drive, which is dumb because the one I had been using was in an actual Sun external case (I think what ended up working was an AppleCD 300, the internal version, in a noname external enclosure). No wonder I hate SCSI. After vowing never to deal with that again I ended up spinning up a Linux VM to netboot via RARP and BOOTP, which is (relatively) easy for getting the installer going on anything not Solaris.

    Doesn't really remind me of tunnel vision. It seems very "digital" whereas tunnel vision is more "analog". This is just a perfectly clean-edged square of blankness. Plus it's a passive matrix, I didn't think those were susceptible to that. I don't know much about these kinds of displays, but I guess it might be that there's a dead spot in the "grid" that means everything from that point on simply cannot display? I couldn't really tell how it works from my disassembling of the screen.

    Update: Finally found a disk to put in the enclosure that it agrees to boot from, so I can at least get Mac OS installed. Other issues still stand... noticed that if the screen is in the yellow state pictured above, it'll persist after the machine is shut off, then fade away. I don't like the look of that, as it suggests a probable physical defect.

    Alright... finally got an AC adapter. Looks like this adventure isn't over yet, though-- yet more problems await. Firstly, I guess the screen got damaged in transit or something. The top right corner of the screen has a rectangular spot that's totally blank. I thought it might be loose or something, so I took the display apart and found that if I apply pressure near it, roughly the bottom right corner of the "box", it turns yellow for a bit but then reverts back to black. Fixable or just a totally dead spot? The box shape seems odd to me. (Pics attached) Other problem... I can't seem to get it to boot from an external SCSI drive connected via HDI30 adapter. I have a 2GB disk with System 7.5.5 on it and some utilities, including Internal HD Format (I want to erase the drive that came with it and install fresh, because it's full of crap)... but it seems to completely ignore it. Tried the usual cmd-opt-shift-del, etc, PRAM clear, PMU reset. Doesn't work with this drive, or an AppleCD 600i I tried to rig up. I checked IDs and termination as well. The drive works on my Quadra 800. I tried pulling the internal drive to force it to try booting off SCSI. I also can't check if it's picking up anything from the install that came on the machine because not only does it not have any SCSI tools, but it doesn't even have the Apple CD extension. And the floppy drive's dead. Gets weirder though. While messing with this, twice in a row, I got the ? Disk icon, then it seemed to access the external and I got a Sad Mac (00000F/000003) which confused me. Trying it again, things went back to how they were before (Just the ? Disk) and THEN on one boot it did a full out Chimes of Death with a blank screen. Couldn't get it to boot. Then it suddenly booted again, but of course back to the ? Disk. And now, still trying, it hasn't Sad Mac'd again, but then it stopped booting again. Unplugged it for a few seconds, now it boots again. Bad PRAM battery? Where is it anyway? I didn't see it anywhere on the board. I pulled the main battery because it's not looking so healthy (lovely blue flakes on the connector...) Might take you up on that spare 150, this one could be a lost cause. Although it does have a 20MB Duo memory card inside, so I got that out of it!

    Looks like I might as well. I just found one of them (APS-17adp) for under ten bucks so I ordered it. We'll see if I get sent the right thing or if the listing was a lie (feeling a bit pessimistic today).

    Apple's site seems to say otherwise, that any adapter >19W will fry the system: https://support.apple.com/kb/TA32393?locale=en_US So I've been doing the math and trying to find something that isn't too high. Also I thought more amps is bad for electronics, but voltage is okay because of the regulator.

    So I grabbed a Powerbook 150, which I've been interested in due to it still being a very late BW/Trackball Powerbook with an IDE drive. I knew going in it had hinge problems, so I thought since it was going to get tossed anyway, I might as well see if I could take drastic measures to fix it. Anyway, the package got stuck in a shipping loop for a while, and when it finally showed up today... the box was absolutely wrecked -- all torn up and crushed and the packing peanuts had mostly fallen out, and to top things off it seems the AC adapter had fallen out of the package at some point and is long gone. The good news is the system and loose screen bezel were completely safe and well packed, so I can still work on that, but I've got no way to turn it on. I've been digging through my AC adapters to see if I can find something that fits the specs (apparently 17W, although the specs I saw for the adapter seem to suggest that it actually is 15W... 7.5V@2.0A) but I haven't dug anything perfect up yet and I'm afraid to try something that's sort of close but not exact, for obvious reasons (5V@2A is the best I've found so far... no good). Can't decide if it's worth the cost to try and find an original, or hack something up that works. As a consolation prize, it does have a hefty RAM upgrade, so I can always use that in another system if this one is dead in the water.

    I'd say practice soldering / recapping using random wires, dead motherboards and the like, that's how I started not too long ago. A year down the road, though, I don't think I'm ready for doing my own recapping on machines I care about. My biggest project yet was modding an early Amiga 500 to 1MB ChipRAM and Kickstart 3.1 (not as easy as later models), and I just about had a nervous breakdown soldering on it cause my motor skills suck. And those were significantly larger targets than you'd deal with in a recap. Sucks cause I have a lot of gear that is either going to need recapped soon, or is way overdue. With a low operating budget (part time college jobs, woo) the only realistic choice is to learn to do it yourself. What I'm saying: You'll need a hell of a lot of practice if you want to sure you're not going to harm your lovely new machine. Don't jump right to the hard stuff or a lot could go wrong!
  15. Add the Quadra 650 to that too. When I was testing my board, hooked to a VGA monitor via adapter, I was getting the green tint but it fixed itself while booting from a 7.6 disc.
