well...I went to used-mac store near me and found the above cards...

FastCache: The most I know about this is that is a cache card for the IIci. I already have the 32k Apple Cache card (which, combined with 32mb of RAM and a 230 mb HD runs system 6 like nobody's business). How large exactly is this Daystar one? Were there multiple sizes? Will I see a considerable real world performance increase in comparison to my Apple cache card? I did a google search for it, but didn't really find much info...

VideoSpigot: Well, this one has 1 composite out port for connecting to a TV. I know I could probably find drivers (if necessary), but is a TV (coax-only: i'd have to get some sort of modulator) really that great as a monitor (only for games, and the like)?

I was going through my stuff and found a "Modulator" from an Apple IIc. It converts the DB-15 to composite. It doesn't physically fit my Macs (bad ID - plastic molded to fit around the back of the IIc only), but if I get a female->male DB-15 cable, it should work on a q650, right (in which case i wouldn't need the VideoSpigot)

they would let me have the cache card for 30 bucks and the spigot for 20 bucks? good deal?

The DayStar FastCache is 64k but doesn't offer much better performance than the 32k Apple cache card in a IIci. Take a look at these benchmarks. The only significant difference is a 3% increase in disk performance.

The VideoSpigot is a digitizer/capture device (not output), and is about as good as the on-board video capture on a Quadra 660av/840av (i.e., 4-6 fps). It's designed for making small-frame quicktime clips to be used on the web or on CD-ROM's/etc.

P.S. - One more thing, before you try using a TV as a work monitor, read what I said in this thread.

actually there were 32k versions also. would the improved math routines help to get mpegdec to run on a ci?

yes! another correct guess!

I doubt it...but it's worth a try. I'm going to be receiving my Turbo '040 for my own IIci soon, though. I'll see how well it along with a PAS-16 audio card run MpegDec!

wel, I know that TVs suck as a normal monitor, but i would only be using the TV as a large second monitor for games of Wolfenstein, Marathon, and the like...

Guess I don't need the FastCache since I already have the Apple Cache card...guess I won't need the VideoSpigot either considering I don't really have a use for it (too slow to import/playback 60 second scenes from VHS movies?)

That Apple IIc modulator should work, right?

I'm still thinking its designed for a resolution lower than 640x480...the Apple II series machines ran at very low resolutions.

Well...an adapter like that should be non-resolution specific, no?

Actually, cinemafia, TVs aren't all that bad, depending on what type of modulator you are using. Right now i'm typing this from my LC630, connected to a 51cm Panasonic TV through my Apple Presentation System. The box is actually a FOCUS Enhancements L*TV Portable Pro, but has been rebadged by Apple, and i'm extremely impressed by it. Right now as i type this, my menu bar is extremely clear and legible, as is Netscape's title bar. I can also see the control strip quite well, as i can what i am typing, as well as all the other text on 68kMLA Forums. However, in the Finder, i can barely see the names of icons. Thats the only bad thing. Other than that, i really am impressed with the performance of scan converters, and, let me tell you, are they good for games! You should see how FA/18 Hornet looks! Of course, i wouldn't want to do a lot of word processing on this, but still, its a great system for games, movies and web surfing and stuff. I heartily reccommend it to anyone who has a TV bigger than their computer screen.

Cool, MacLover, that FOCUS box does do a good job of displaying to a tv. Just be careful of static images!*
