I am sure many of us have more than one of these beauties (macs I mean). I mean, I began this 68k liberation only a few weeks ago and already I have 2 systems. I have read of people having 18 of these babies around. So (for those of us that do not have integrated monitors) what kind of kvm configurations do you guys/galls use out there? kvm meaning of course Keyboard, Video, and Mouse. I am only familiar with PC (ps/2?) KVMs. . .as I have more than one PC as well(bought the first . . .built the second!). I have seen some interesting products that convert ADB stuff to ps/2 for use in a switch. Whadday'all usin?

Well, at the moment my only (working) 68k is my little Duo 270c, and I'm not using any external mouse or keyboard, unless it is in the VCR. (Duo Dock) When it is docked I use an Apple Design Keyboard, and a Kensington Mouse in a box ADB.

I don't have a KVM, but I have 2 keyboards and mice set up for my older Macs:

AppleVision 1710AV + AppleDesign Keyboard + ADB Mouse II: Used with PM8100 and Quadra 700

Apple ColourPlus Display + AppleDesign Keyboard + ADB Mouse II: Used with LC630 and LCIII

It works great.

I need a 4 port kvm for my old macs. I seen a few manual ones on ebay. the ones I use for my PC's are electronic 4 port versions and work great.

For my game pc's I use a Belkin soho 4 port ps2+usb kvm (even switches mic and sound)

For my work pc's I use an old Belkin ps2 or serial kvm

I am not all too convinced that adb + video kvm switches exist! the guy at the local mac store assured me that they do exitst, just that they have none.

I just want to be able to use one apple monitor and one keyboard/mouse for 2 computers. . .or more. . .is that so wrong?

So if anyone knows of something that has 3 ADB ports and 3 apple monitor ports (2 macs, one kvm) please post a link or something.

It seems that it can be done rather expensively with a few different devices (maybe one for the monitor, one for the adb), but I am convinced that this is not the only solution.

Found one at a local place called JB Saunders.
Is $34.50 too much to pay for a A/B switch for ADB and monitor?
I think it is, consodering the one I got for my pcs were much cheaper. . .but it was also a bit difficult to track down. . .hmm

it'll definately be worth it not having to go behind my desk and physically switch monitor and adb. . .

After visiting the local shop and picking up the adb kvm, I returned home to try it all out. Nothing was right. I must say I did purchase it a bit hastilly because I wanted to work on it last night. Needless to say, I returned today and got my $$$ back. they did not have the Mini DIN 4 pin/DB15f a/b switch.

but I found a source for 2-1 and 4-1 Data Switches. These incorporate both DB15F (monitor) and Mini DIN 4pin (keyboard).

http://www.mycableshop.com/sku/DSS%2015M42.htm

I picked up the 4-1 version and 2 male to male DB15 cords. thanks to the box of miscellaneous stuff, I got a handful of 4 pin male to males for free!

By the way, Trash80toG-4, I read through your Brick Oven thread. . .amazing project! Any updates? (I admit I did not have time to read all of it, so if it is old stuff, I appologize)

It used to be about $50 at MacWarehouse, works great! I've never seen a less expensive one, but it's no longer on Compucable's site.

does that have db15 & miniDIN4pin (I might be getting actual abreviations wrong. . .)

I just wanted an all in one solution. . .but i have no macs that are all in one. . .so I have to share a monitor
if that has it all (monitor & keys), it looks like one beefy box!

Has anyone tried a USB kvm with newer macs?. Of course this is relevant because somebody out there might create a USB for 68k hack.... It may happen...

A computer needs PCI to be able to have USB (something to do with the chipset) so a 68k cant be connected to USB

finally got my 4 way switch. It has db15 & miniDIN4pin. I haven't had an extensive amount of time to test it all out, but the video works for sure. I am having issues with the adb (keyboard/mouse port). For some reason when I have my systems going only one of them can use the keyboard/mouse, the rest are controlless. So I know that by plugging the adb cable into the i/o it gets to at least one computer, but not the rest. Any ideas?

So I have had a bit of time to test out the data switch.

Here's the set up thus far on a 4 system data switch (hope my chart turns out!):

|----i/o-------|D(Performa)--|C (G3)-------|B. ..A. . .empty
|--------------|-------------|-------------|----------------
|-Monitor IN-| Monitor Out-|-Monitor Out-|
|-Keyboard IN|-Keyboard Out|-Keyboard Out|

awwwwcrap.. .not gonna site here ans ascii the hell out of that graph. . .so

I/O: monitor In/heyboard In
D (Performa 630): monitor out/keyboard out
C (G3):monitor out/keyboard out
B: empty
A: empty

this data switch has 3 ports per machine:
1 x DB-15 (monitor)
2 x 4-pin ADB

Right now I am only using the DB-15 and one ADB for each machine. . .

The video works fine. The keyboard/mouse control is what I am having issues with. The performa gets keyboard response, which leads me to believe that this could work, but the g3 does not, and it is not just the g3, I have set up 68ks into the configuration, all with similar results. Is ADB hot swappable? Maybe it is my cabling, but I am almost certain I ruled that out. . .any ideas?

I use ADB Reset, but I couldn't find a link.

edit: Make sure each Mac is selected on the KVM when it boots. According to the tech support of my KVM mfr., the problems I have stem from the different OS levels. That's why they sometimes loose track of the mouse settings when switching around between Macs. I keep an alias of ADB Reset on the desktop of each so I can run it from the keyboard if the mouse fails to respond.

A few things to note. . .I am using a 4 port analog kvm. . .didn't have enough $$$ to go the electronic route. I did get ADB reset (I think. . .on a site I could not understand because of the asian characters. . .program seems to run), but it does me no good if I can't even use the keyboard to execute it so it resets. Keep on keeping on. For some reason the kvm is partial to my Performa 630. . .always works with that. . .hmmm

The things works pretty good so far

had 3 machines on it this morning

pm8500 os 9.1
q840av os 7.6.1
IIfx os 7.1

connected to a panasonic 15" monitor

the svga montor plugs into the unit without having to use an adapter (has both mac and pc connections for main monitor, mac connection for 4 systems).

The video cables look shielded and are original dr bott cables (has name in the plastic) at 1024x768 I dont see a problem with ghosting so far. Will do more testing on a 17" monitor when I move the systems into the lab.

I switch between the systems and only problem I seen so far was the pm8500 got a slightly slugish mouse after switching around (think there is a fix for this). Other problem is that the built in video on the 840av only lets me use 640x480 ( need a program to force video modes since I am using a non apple monitor). The other 2 units have aftermarket video cards ( pm8500 has ultimate rez, and the iifx has a supermac 8/24). You have to have the switch set to the machine your booting from to sense the video on bootup. Other then a few small issues it works as good as expected. From what I read on lowendmac.com this is the kvm to get for adb.

Run ADB Reset and it'll fix the problem whenever it crops up.

yeah, the only place I found it was what seemed to be a website made in asia (characters). I was a bit wary downloading it, because I could not read what it said, but when I installed it it was all english. I just tried lookgin for the link. . .luckily I saved it.
http://www.edit.ne.jp/~usa/macintosh/factory/adbreset.php.

I take no responsability if anything happens when you download this. I downloaded it to a Centris 610, installed it, and nothing bad has happened. I have actually had no chance to see if it actually works. . .so this is totally at your own risk. . .

is $60 ~ish USD a bad price for a 3 port ADB/mac KVM?

I saw it in MacWarehouse catalog just the other day, I'll find a link or something tonight...

A 3 way kvm is ok, I wanted the 4 way. I assume cables for the one I linked to are extra.
This makes the 3rd 4 way KVM I have in use 2 for pc and the one for mac.

you could get between 5 and 9 computers, by KVMing and KVM

just imagine a stack of beigeyG3's running Jaguar Server, al what with the ADB KVMs and just one monitor running the show.
