This thread will be a work in progress, so give it some time... I hope to keep an A/UX compatibility list and FAQ here to answer all of the threads that invariably pop up about "will A/UX run on (insert 68k here)?" or "Why won't A/UX (insert basic computing function here)".

Like trash80's Links Project, this will eventually be the UberThread of A/UX.

A good deal of this information is from comp.os.aux on Google Groups.

For starters:

What languages are available for A/UX?

A/UX comes with a C compiler ('cc'), a FORTRAN-77 compiler ('f77') as wellas an assembler ('as'), SNOBOL ('sno') and a kinda-basic interpreter ('bs'). 'cc' is a nice, stable, if not-too-quick compiler. 'f77' is a true FORTRAN-77 compiler and appears quite workable. I've not used 'sno' (I couldn't recall how to program in SNOBOL if my life depended on it :) or 'bs'.

If you are doing any work in C, then it would be well worth it to get a copy of the GNU C compiler ('gcc') (see Q&A #P.03). gcc is K&R and ANSI compatible so if you are doing ANSI work you'll need it. Apple also has an ANSI C compiler ('c89') that you can buy. It's available on the "A/UX Developer's Toolkit CD" from APDA. There is also at least one other 3rd-party C compiler out there, but I can't recall it's name right now. gcc is free; c89 runs about $800. Both include C++ capabilities.

There are also 2 very good 3rd-party FORTRAN compilers: NKR FORTRAN and Absoft MacFORTRAN II. In my opinion, MacFORTRAN II is the better product... it has finer compiler control, a wide number of compatibility options (such as VAX FORTRAN) and excellent speed. If you do order MFII, be _sure_ to get the A/UX version. They also sell an MPW version that will work under A/UX but it's run under, you guessed it, MPW. The A/UX version is a true "Unix" compiler and it's optimized for A/UX. Both MFII and NKR FORTRAN run about $500-$600.

Oasys sells 3 compiler packages: C, C++ and FORTRAN. All the compilers are based on the GreenHills compilers which are known to be robust and fast. However, the Oasys packages are expensive, running about $2000 per language (although you do get assemblers and linker/loaders with the package). Unisoft used to distribute their "Optimizing Compilers" (FORTRAN and C) for A/UX, but they are no longer available... Pity, because they also were based on GreenHills and were quite nice.

At present, I know of no true Pascal compilers for A/UX.

Finally, if you are doing program development, then you'll need a good
debugger. As described above in "List of ports...", gdb has been ported if you would prefer using something other than sdb or dbx, which are included with A/UX. If you are using FORTRAN, then Absoft also makes an excellent debugger which has been fine-tuned to work with MFII (it also does quite well with C); it's called FX. It has two interfaces, character and Motif, and is quite powerful.

I just liberated a 68k, will A/UX run on it?

Probably not

A/UX 3.0.1 can be installed on:

- all of the Mac II's
- the SE/30
- Quadra 610
- Quadra 650
- Quadra 700
- Quadra 800
- Quadra 900
- Quadra 950
- some of the Centrises.

Whatever machine you choose, make sure it has a PMMU (programmed memory management unit) and an FPU (floating point unit). If you want to run A/UX on a something like a Centris 610, you'll have to install a true 68040 processor first. The 68LC040 will not do.

I'm not sure about a 68060

Hardware Requirements for A/UX

A/UX was designed for the legacy Macintosh (those based on the Motorola 68k architecture), and was never ported to the PowerPC. Therefore, the choice of machine is rather critical.

A complete installation of A/UX 3.01 requires about 80MB of hard drive space. If you want a useable system, I wouldn't recommend anything less than double that. The Apple Tech Info Library indicates that A/UX 3.01 will run with 5MB of RAM (8MB if you want to run MacX), but I wouldn't install it on a system with less than 16MB. One of the few
universal statements in computing: More is better. (Within reason... I have read some articles indicating that A/UX 3.01 is not compatible with drives over 2GB.)

A/UX is also rather picky about the CDROM... The comp.unix.aux faq lists the following CDROM drives as 100% compatible:
- Toshiba XM3201, MX3301B, XM3401, XM3501
- DEC RRD42, RRD40 (LMSI CM-212)
- Sun CDROM
- Sony CDU-8012
- CD-Technologies Porta-Drive
- Chinon CDA-431
- Denon DRD 253

If your CDROM is not recognized by the installer, you might want to try updating the driver on the A/UX boot floppy. I read a number of articles describing how to modify version 5.4.2 of the Apple CDROM driver to recognize 3rd-party drives, and applied it to the A/UX installer with considerable success.

If you plan to network your A/UX server, be wary of the network card as well. Some network cards are not compatible with A/UX, and the odds of finding a driver are slim to none. (If you want a good laugh, email any manufacturer of networking products and ask for A/UX drivers.) If you want to be perfectly safe, choose a Mac with a built-in AAUI network card.

How can i pull off that CDROM Driver Modification you were talking about?

This info is from here, with pictures:
http://www.aux-penelope.com/CDROM.html

If you have access to one of the "officially supported" CDROM drives listed on the previous page, this section is completely optional. Otherwise, read on... you might want to try this before purchasing a replacement drive. Start by obtaining a copy of the Apple CDROM driver version 5.4.2. I extracted mine from a system running MacOS 8.1. Open a backup copy of the driver using Resedit, and doubleclick the DRVR icon. Two items will appear... Select ID 32. From the Resource menu, choose Open Using Hex Editor.

Scroll to offset 06B6, and change the value 6704 to 4E71.

Scroll to offset 09C6, and change 6606 4A84 6700 0086 to 4E71 4E71 4E71 4E71.

Save the file and close Resedit. Insert the A/UX startup floppy, and open the Extensions folder. You will have to delete the CDROM Hack extension, and replace it with the modified v5.4.2 CDROM driver.

I tested this using an Apple 600i drive... Before the modification, the installer was unable to recognize the CDROM. After replacing the standard CDROM Hack extension with the modified v5.4.2 driver, the installation proceeded normally. Note that I have not tested this with other drives, and cannot guarantee it will work with your particular 3rd-party CDROM. If you simply want to try the driver without performing the modification yourself, I have a ready-made copy
here
.

Oh. sorry.

These ftp archives probably don't have them, but if you search through them all you might find them. The first one i'd check is that Jagubox one. After that, i don't know where they might be.

You could ask at the OS Beta Archive forums: http://osbetaarchive.com and somebody will probably have it.

Do you know if an Apple CD drive from a 7100 would work for installing A/UX?

and would ~29mb of RAM be good enough?
[Ive got a Quadra 950, currently no HD or CD, but it has 29mb ram…]
Ive got a 700mb HD from a 7100 and a 320mb HD from a Quadra 660av avalible right now… [and a spare SyQuest EZFlyer, which I would prefer to install on (230mb cartridges)…]

Well, Thanks ^_^

If I open my window all the bugs will get in… That's just one more reason to use a Mac!

The cd from the 7100 may work, it is worth trying for sure. But to explain the whole CDrom thing, read this post
topic.asp.TOPIC_ID=4736.html

AUX can be installed on any drive too, I sucessfully installed it on both an internal and external drive on a Quadra 950 and an SE/30.

Why do i have to have a full MC68040 for A/UX?

well... A/UX requires a Floating Point Unit to run, and the MC68LC040 is a 68040 without the FPU. This allows the LC040 to be cheaper, and that is why it is used in the lower-end Performas and LC's and such, but the full 040 is required for A/UX because A/UX requires an FPU.

I'm not sure that there's any way to add an FPU to a system with an LC040 on it without upgrading to an MC68040.

Hate to come down on you like this, but...

Since most of these Q&A's appear to be copied and pasted from Jim Jagielski's original A/UX FAQ, wouldn't it have been easier to just post a link to it?

Also, people would then be able to read this little tidbit:

quote:
This FAQ is "copyrighted" in the same sense that all other FAQs are copy-
righted: the FAQ may be _freely_ redistributed as long as the author's/editor's
name and this notice is included. If contents of this FAQ are to be published,
then you should ask the author's/editor's permission to do so.

You might also want to note that JaguBox has been down for a long time now.

A new and up-to-date A/UX FAQ is a great idea. Copying an old (and somewhat outdated) one and claiming it to be your own, is less than great, IMHO.

then you should ask the author's/editor's permission to do so.

You might also want to note that JaguBox has been down for a long time now.

A new and up-to-date A/UX FAQ is a great idea. Copying an old (and somewhat outdated) one and claiming it to be your own, is less than great, IMHO.

didnt realize the comp.os.aux FAQ was copyrighted... and at the top there is the disclaimer "A good deal of this information is from comp.os.aux on Google Groups"... but this didnt really take off like i thought it would...

i figured other people would post their own questons and answers until it really was great but instead its just kinda here.

The FAQ on faq.org is going to be archived on The Respository for any who are interested.

I will be adding notations as I install AUX and anyone who has comments or suggestions regarding anything in the FAQ is welcome to add them.

At the moment, The Repository isn't publically visible, but if you want to see it, just ask me and I'll give the folder it's in.

Agreed alien.

tBoJ, WHAT is this "repository" thing?
it sounds a heckuvalot like Catsdorule's Mac Info Repository, which is now almost one year old. I will be hosting the Mac Info Repository (on Intrikit Weaver), which is all possible info, on all macintoshes.

well sorry, just curios about something I'd tried to get answers before, on AIM and on the forum, but I either didn't get a clear answer, or I wasn't thinking clearly that night... *(and I was curios while I was at school, where we don't have AIM)

The man is quick, answered within 5 minutes (apparently he's 6 timezones west of me). And good to hear that even today, A/UX is still in commercial use! (Jim runs an ISP these days.)

This is great! I am glad to hear that Jagubox might come back to life, or at least in some kind of incarnation! Great, sign me up, I cant wait! I am taking a unix class right now so I will be able to try all of this cool stuff out on the A/UX machines. Hey, if you talk to jim, ask him if he has any spare manual sets. I want to buy one and scan it in.
