What I just said to Gordoom earlier.

$50 isn't really that bad...I got mine for $13, but that was a lot of luck. Course, I've spent way too much on it since then...hell, $50 went to maxing out the RAM alone!

$ to £ conversion it appears you've paid virtually the same as I have just paid for my new 840av.

my cd is 2x, but a sled drive, though I have an 8x cdrom which is now in place, I believe 8x is the fastest the 840av supports.

I got 64 meg of ram, which is great cos then just 2 more simms to max it out.

AFAIK you can use any 72 pin simms regaurdless of the ns spedd which is often quoted, though weather the 840av would make use of 100ns 72 pin simms as opposed to 70ns 72 pin simms, I'm not sure.

I got an apple/svga monitor convertor, I have one already but they are handy things.

now you have a lot to think about about how to prepare this mac for it's new life.

Hmmm...I wonder... The optical drive I have in my 840av now reads at 8x and writes at 4x, but I do have a 32x CD-ROM that I could pop into it to see if will work.

You can put any speed CD-ROM drive, up to the maximum throughput of the SCSI bus.

I've got to decide how to configure the RAM, now. I bought a pair of 32 meg simms, and it came with 24 already (I would assume that's 8 + 16). I've got a pair of 16 meg simms in my 660av. Should I snag one of those to get an extra 8 out of the 840av? Or should I give one of the 32's to the 660av, and let both computers have a very very comfortable amount?

Candy, that 24 is more likely a pair of 8-meg sticks and a pair of 4-meg sticks. That's what I've got in my 840.

As for which machines get which RAM: that's up to you. Consider how much you'd be using the 660 now that you have the 840. I would advise, however, not breaking up pairs of SIMMs. Remember that the 840s can do interleaving (I think - someone confirm me on this?).

I feel a sort of obligation to give the 660av some real power after having it this long, but what WILL I be doing with it??

Someone explain RAM interleaving - I see it as a footnote comment on everymac all the time and never think to ask what it is

RAM Interleaving can be thought of as RAID for RAM. The caveat is that you have to install SIMMs in pairs of the same capacity, speed and manufacturer, and I believe that it doesn't hurt if you install your faster pair in A1/A2, then B1/B2 and so on.

I see. Perhaps if two same-sized double-sided simms were placed in correct banks, the corresponding sides of one would be interleaved with the corresponding sides of the other. Let's hope my 32-meg simms that are coming are double sided!

I was under the impression that the 840av did interleave ram, hmmm

either way I am still at a loss as to what it means even after reading the above link, from dana.

Though I get the feeling that as I only ever intend to have 32 meg simms installed in pairs to achieve maximum memory does this qualify me as an interleaver? if indeed any of my machines interleaved?

I really feel this subject was best ignored y I am bothering to bring it up now is anybodies guess.
