I came across this thing just before the forums went down, so there's only 22 hours of the auction left.

If it's for real, was Apple maybe the first to come up with the whole clear case idea after all? And is it really worth $1500.00?

To answer your original question, Apple used to (dunno if they still do) "shoot" the plastic molds with clear plastic before they added the texturing that the final products would get. This would produce a plastic case that was clear and has a smooth surface, like glass.

They did this to test the mold and look for imperfections in the design and manufacturing process. They would typically produce a few of the items in this clear case and assemble them so they could see internal measurements and how well pieces fit together. I've seen a Mac SE, the Portable and several Newtons. I've also heard of a few others, but haven't seen them.
