. . . what little remains of my sanity!

This is making me absolutely nuts! I was experimenting with different static images for my avatar over on applefritter and tried using a silly animation from hamsterdance.com for a change. It was way too wide so it got all scrunched when scaled to fit the square avatar format. It looked ridiculous, but i was able to condense it to a reasonable width and it looked a little better. But there was all that empty space above the stupid rodents so I figured out a way to make a new animation in a square format and I put them on pogo sticks to use the full space available. How does this HamsterPogo Animation look in your browsers? It won't loop in Navigator 4.73 (neither does the original for that matter! ) and only the hamster on the left looks correct in iCab 2.8.1 (PPC). The ears flicker incorrectly as the other two are on the way up and I can't figure out what's wrong!

Please let me know how this POS looks/plays in other browsers, this is REALLY frustrating! Does anybody have any idea what I'm doing wrong? (other than wasting a LOT of time )

I used Google's Image search and i couldn't come up with a single halfway decent pogo stick animation to steal! I was pretty excited when I adapted these hamsters to look like they were actually jumping on the pogos correctly, so I'd like to figure out how to perfect the web playback.

Thanks in advance for any feedback and advice!

It works spot-on in Mozilla under osx - all bouncing fine, they look the same, no squishiness or... stuff.

GREAT! Thanks, Dana, that sure was fast! Do all three of the varmints look identical? It'd be the action of the ears that would most likely be off. I think my browser is dropping information or something, do they interpolate if timing is off or some such b.s. I dunno!?!!

I think I blew up my fritter profile this morning! Now I'm listed as a guest in all my old posts and i can't log on because my username doesn't exist! Maybe this animation got me banned!

Fine here on iCab 2.8.1 for OS X, and fine on IE 5.2.1 for OS X.

Hate to ask such an obvious question, but, are you sure some of the ear-squishing you're seeing isn't because your browser's disk cache or RAM cache is using an older version of the image with the current image's dimension parameters? I ask b/c I forget about this all the time, and when I try to proof new images on web pages I get really p.o.'d before I remember to flush the disk cache and quit and relaunch the browser.

By the way, totally kick-@ss animation!

the quitting and restarting is a new suggestion, i had tried emptying the cache when the first changes didn't take, i'll give the quit-n-start angle a go later. thanks, i'm still a noob when it comes to the technical side of web pages, browsers and all that newfangled crap.

thanks for the report, the suggestion and the compliment! it's derivative so i can't take all the credit, but i'm pleased with the way it came out! this is the first computer animation i've ever tried.

Thanks, comrades!

Clearing out the image cache, quitting and then restarting iCab worked like a charm, maceo, thanks! just goes to show, the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked! Thank's, comrade!

The same kinda thing happened to me on fritter recently, there was a PhoneNet bughunt in progress and they'd tried everything, including swapping all the adapters around, I asked if they'd checked the phone wires to make sure two pairs were implemented . . . NOPE, just one pair!

However, there's no help at all for Navigator 4.73, it still won't loop!

Well, if you are a cantankerous old coot like me (And I know that you are!) then you have turned off animation looping in your browser so you would not have to watch all those annoying spam-banners (us old-coots can't handle too many things wiggling and jiggling in our field of view without getting distracted -- grew up on Mister Rogers, not MTV). When I first went to your pogo-hamsters-on-parade, they did not loop until I turned looping back on. (In Netscape 6.2, this toggle is found under Preference:Privacy & Security:Images)

Oh, and although the new hamsters have me ROTFLMAO, this old coot has a fondness for your original hamster-dance cuz it had that pixelated early-web look.

Hmmmm.... I wonder if you can turn a pogo-hamster into a jumping icon on the OSX dock?

Cheers coot,

Oh, sure, you're frustrated?

But, anyway, all the dancing/pogo-ing hamsters display perfectly in Opera for Windows, which I'm using right now!

LOL! Damn betcha! thx, marchie!

I just wanna know how you knew i stayed up all night hacking that freakin'.GIF!?!!

I tweaked the ears a little more and cleaned up the springs that I'd thrown together temporarily. I guess the only thing left would be to add a line as a reference for the ground, does it look stupid having them jumping on air or is it fine as is? I forgot to ask if the speed of the animation looked good, it seems a little slow to me on fritter, but my judgement about it is totally shot at this point.

The speed is fine on fritter - good sedate pace for those rotund rodents. A ground line is not really needed, but if you do add one, try animating some little dust poofs. And, if you are a total glutton for animation punishment, you could add a moving road surface (one dashed stripe in the middle of the road passes under the hamsters on each animation cycle)

Its all too funny.

Hamster3 pogo Hamster1 pogo Hamster2 pogo

Hamster2 pogo Hamster1 pogo Hamster1 pogo

Hamster3 pogo Hamster3 pogo Hamster1 pogo

etc

Instead of Hamster1 pogo Hamster2 pogo Hamster3 pogo or whatever it is.

There are stacks of HTML random number generators around

ie http://www.honeylocust.com/javascript/randomizer.html

for example.

I think random pogoing would look good.

Also changing the pogoing pattern from random back to pogoing in order using a time delay would
look good.

Don't know much about random animated GIF's.

Are they possible.

Getting randomly pogoing hamsters with HTML would be possible.

I don't know how hard it would be.

I don't know anything about GIF's or HTML, I just treated the frames like I used to do flipbook animations in my notebooks in school!
Any randomness in the vertical framing would just look strange to me because of Newton's restrictions, but a single hamster randomly changing directions and speed laterally thru the vertical 7 frame cycles or remaining stationary for a couple of them might be very cool.

It's over my head tho!
