First of all, I figured out why my LAN hasn't been getting TCP/IP connection on more than one machine at a time. What happened is I agreed to pay my ISP (RoadRunner) $5 more each month in order to get what I was told were four additional IP addresses. This seemed to be an increadible deal, but as I have now learned, I was slightly misled. What I agreed to pay for was one (and only one) static IP address (as opposed to one dynamic IP address beforehand) and an IP NAT setup on RoadRunner's end, which would allow me to setup a fake IP LAN with up to five machines. While the idea of having a static IP address is kinda nice, since with it I can run a VPN or do other nifty things, I can setup an IP NAT with the hardware I already have for free. So, while I decide whether or not I want to keep paying $60 extra a year for a static IP, I've decided to setup my Quadra 840av as an IP gateway for the rest of my LAN. I know, it sounds crazy, using an AV machine as a router, but right now it's the best machine for the job, because not only can it act as a gateway, it can easily run a Hotline, FTP and/or web server at the same time (thanks to it's memory and RAID capabilities) and can even server up streaming audio or video if I were so inclined. So, this morning I decide to set it up. I put an Asante 10bT nubus RJ-45 card in the last empty slot - eventually I'd like to get an Asante 10/100 nubus card so that it will be able to transfer files over AppleTalk at 100MBps, but for now 10bT is plenty. Then, I connected the cable modem to the 840av's onboard ethernet and ran a crossover cable from the Nubus ethernet card to the hub. I'm not 100% positive I need a crossover cable going from the Quadra/Gateway to the hub, but since I needed one going from the cable modem to the hub, I'm assuming that I do. Next, I go on the 68k MLA hotline server and download IPNetRouter 1.5.4, and get it ready. But, wait, the Asnate ethernet card isn't lighting up! Oh yeah, I forgot to install the driver! So I search on Asante's website for the universal Nubus ethernet driver, and download it. Here's where I run into my first problem. The download is in the old 3.5" floopy disk image format, and it can't be mounted with regular DiskCopy. So, I bring out Floppy-DiskCopy, but it needs a floppy disk to write to. I yanked the floppy drive out of my 840av in order to have room for three 3.5" hard drives! So, now I have to open the 840av up again, dig through my parts bin and find a working 1.44MB floppy drive and cable. I reboot, get floppy-DiskCopy to load the image onto the disk, and presume I'm ready to install it. Here's where the second problem arises. I attempt to install Asante's nubus ethernet driver pack, and it crashes, saying that some files in the System could not be updated. It suggests I restart and try again. So, I reboot...and get a question-marked-floppy-icon. Just great. After numerous failed attempts to boot from the hard drive, I end up having to boot from a burn of the OS 8.1 CD. Once booted, i examine the Quadra's system drive and learn that the System has been corrupted by the failed Asante Nubus ethernet driver installer! AAAARRRRGGG!!! Now I have to reinstall OS 8.1 on my Quadra for the FOURTH time. Only, i don't have time to...by then it was 10:45 and I had to drop off Cleo and get to work by 11:30. GREAT! So, that's why my server aint up today. Hopefully I'll have either OS 8.1 or OS 7.6.1 (since 8.1 has been a problem, lately) running by tomorrow morning, will have the gateway setup, and will have my Hotline server back online. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

you shouldn't need the crossover cable unless you're plugging the 840av into the uplink port of the hub. I did the same thing with my q650 and did not use a crossover cable. Here's a little trick I've done with my cable connection:I have the linksys router setup connected to the cable modem. I started it up for the first time after the system was switched over after @home went down to dhcp. Moments after it got the address and info from my isp, i immediately switched the settings to manual and gave the router all the settings it had just acquired via dhcp. So now, my router is always asking for that ip address and afaik (and hoping) the servers on the other end, just think that the one computer (, my contract is for only one machine, but we have around 10 in reality) is just always on and has kept that one ip address since day one. That has worked for a really long time for myself and a friend who tried the idea out. Just a thought for all you broadband users. _______________________ Sgt. I am. So, I probably need the crossover cable. I also have a feeling that if I cancel the $5/month surcharge, any attempt to run an IP NAT on my end will fail. So, the whole thing is sort of a sham, but at least it's not that expensive of a sham. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

It should work just fine. AFAIK, using a NAT to route your ip addresses will work without a hitch, that was the whole point behind NAT was to give one external ip addresses multiple on the respective internal. I don't know what your ISP setup is, but they probably just route you 5 ips address from a router similar to what you would have in your home, except they are charging a high price. It's probably not worth the struggle, but if you want to save the money, it should work fine. I had a router on a router for a while here at my home with the intent to have my entire room on the DMZ port of the hardware router. It worked, but i decided that it wasn't required for what i needed._______________________ Sgt. If you connect to an UPlink port, you need NO crossover (usually). If you connect to any other port you DO need one. The reason being, most systems with "crossover" ports are wired to use a straight cable. You can always hook 2 hubs or whjatnot together via the normal ports and a crossover cable. Use a straight cable to go from the modem to the 840AV. Use a straight cable from a standard hub port to the second ethernet card on the 840AV. (This is the standard way of doing things and makes it easier to troubleshoot. A crossover from a computer to an uplink port does not always work reliably.) NAT should always work, even without the extra $5 you pay, EXCEPT... RoadRunner has a wonderful packet sniffer built in. Inside most all packets you send out to the net, the Media Access Control address (MAC address, Hardware Address) is inside the packet, and helps with the re-routing back inside yournetwork. RoadRunner reads the packets and likes to toss out the packets from NATed systems on your internal network. If you stop paying the extra $5, you likely won't be able to NAT at all. Makes sure your internal network is properly set up to use private IP addressing, either in the Class C or Class A groups. IP Net Router prefers class C ala: 192.168.x1.x2 where x1=the same number on ALL your computers, with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 That should be all... good luck. Exactly. Because a lot of the people I work with doing Comcast's broadband support live in the same area, a lot of us have RoadRunner. We've quickly noticed just how much more aggressive RoadRunner is about this than Comcast. Anyway, today just isn't going well, at all. I successfully reinstall OS 8.1 on my 840av (I tried to install 7.6.1 from the CD that I burned using the 7.6.1 disk image from the 68k MLA server, however, it appears to be corrupted and crashes everytime it tries to install), but I'm having some weird extention conflicts. I need to get the correct version of OT and a few other things moved over to it, and I have all of them on CD, but for some reason it wouldn't mount any CD's, even though all the correct extentions for doing such were loaded. I just didn't have enough time to troubleshoot, and ended up racing out of the house without any breakfast, nearly ran out of gas, and ended up five minutes late to work. Bummer... But, today is Pay Day, and we're having a little pizza party here at work to commemorate our second week on the job! Then there's also the pleasantry of the three-day-Labor-Day-weekend to look forward to! 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net Edited by - cinemafia on 30 Aug 2002 12:25:46

It was Amechi's...a small, local chain. I haven't had their pizza in years, and the last time I did it was nasty, but this time it was quite good! A little too thin for me, but very good toppings.666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

Maybe I can mail order one of them. Its pretty cool how they FedEX pizzas to your house from Chicago. That was the best pizza that I have ever had! Of cource its always better at the restaurant._________________ Leutennant SCCHICAGO HotLineServer(closed): scchicago.dynodns.net Website(closed): http://scchicago.dynodns.net MyForum(closed): http://scchicago.dynodns.net/forum NOTE:MAIN SERVER ONLY ON WHEN I'M ONLINE |

My favorite local pizza place was bought out meny years ago and the owner opened a Italian Hero/Cold Cut Deli kinda store within walking distance of my shop. He and his son just doubled the size of the store and went back into the business with a "California Pizza Oven" menu, I can walk in for a slice with the most outrageous topping assortments and it's HEAVENLY! jt ™. My favorite pizza ever came from Trattoria strada Nova (sp?). It's a gourmet restaurant downtown. It came topped with ricotta and parmesan cheeses, fresh basil and chives, freshly made tomato sauce, and other equally good toppings.BTW, their rack of lamb is incredible too.
