I have officially liberated my first mac.
(well... first in a long time) It [still is] a Macintosh SE FDHD with 1MB or RAM and a loud 20MB HD.

I was rudely interrupted while boting into my 7.0.1 boot disk by a message reporting that I have to have more RAM to use that, I guess that I'll be looking for the old RAM that I need.

Either way, I know I'll be able to get the RAM for almost free, I know people who have that kind of RAM on a keychain ^

But yeah. Great find! Whatever you do though, stick in a bigger HD. Even with System 6, 20 megs doesn't really go that far. I'd say a 40 as a bare minimum.

OK, I'll probably do that...

In addition to that, I now have a PowerBook 100, Mac IIsi, and a 6100 is on the way, Got with this great bounty an iMagewriter II, an external VST battery for the PB, an 800k floppy drive, a powerbook floppy, an ethernet adaptor for the powerbook, lots...

there's only a few problems, I don't have a monitor! and the loads of software I got won't work on the SE, plus, I can't get the powerbook's screen to work, it's backlight comes on, I'm thinking it might be the video cable that's come undone... I'll be getting the service manual and checking it out tonight :)

<eliminate the obvious mode>

make sure it's not just the brightness and contrast settings.

It's not a brightness and contrast thing...

2 lines that are white appear when I reset it though... which makes me think that it does work... I know it works because it does the cute little startup sound, then it make a "simple beep" later on, signifying that I probably didn't shut it down right

this is what happens

I plug it in
I turn it on
I hear the mac startup sound
the HD goes to town with itself
I hear the "Oh my gosh you need to actually shut down your computer rather than just turn it off" sound
It goes to sleep
I "turn it on" again
it goes to sleep really fast again

it seems as if the only thing that doesn't work is the display. obviously I have played with the knobs, I haven't however connected an external display, becasue there isn't a port for it

Eep. Thats what happened to mine too. I asked a tech what was wrong with mine, and he told me the logic board was toast. However, some here say its the PRAM battery. I dunno....

Would the PRAM battery(s) be those 3 flat ones that are in that little "caddy" in the back, or it it on the motherboard somewhere?

I'll take a look at the service manual...

dunno if they call them PRAM or Backup batteries, but i have a feeling they are as important to the operation of the 100 as the main battery is to the Portable, but i have no proof of that yet, i keep forgetting to buy a new set!

I didn't see any other battery when I took it apart per the service manual. Maybe a quick look at the service manual will reveal what needs to happen

Yup, there the three little ones in the little door in the back.

it doesn't make sense to replace those little batteries, sense I have confirmed that it boots, macs only do a wild eep when it's fully booted.. right? well if I'm lucky enough not to have shut mine down properly last time I used it, it Eeeps me, which is where it would say something like" Press the poewr button on your keyboard!"

As far as I know, macs only gave that eroor message about an improper shutdown in system 7.5 and higher. Its highly doubtable that a PB 100 has 7.5 on it.

I've seen system 7.1 give that message I think, either way, I know it's working because no other mac that i have makes noises until after bootup is complete (other than the startup sound of course)

pretty much true except in the case of the 475/605 which will boot fine with no video if the PRAM bat is dead for some silly reason an act exactly the same way you are describing.

the docs on the PB 100 are so absolutely clear that the cutoff switches' contact must be open for long term storage that i think they are more important to the 100's operation than the PRAM bat on a MicroQuadra, but that's a guess.

i'm not saying that replacing them will fix anything, bit if i were uncertain about them i'd replace them before doing any troubleshooting, which is why BabyPB (my 100) isn't being worked on ATM.

I'd just want to know where to find some. I also need several of the batteries that are in other macs like the IIsi, 840av and performa 600

it takes my quadra forever to startup probably just because of the batteries...

I'm going to get a mac that's been upgraded to a 266MHz g3, has funny syQuest drive and a burner (I hope) and also the 6100 still on the way

woohoo, a star! and my 6100 came! I have to replace it's PRAM battery, I was going to ask why it won't turn start up (won't even turn on with the keyboard,) but I decided that that was what I needed to do I'll be replacing it soon, While I'm there, I should also replace the ones from My Quadra, performa 600, IIsi and PB 100 :)

I hope that there's a volume discount somewhere

Ummm...the 6100's one of the few Macs that is manually switched on/off, using the power button on the front of the Mac...they won't turn on with a press of the Power key.

Hmm, not even a tone...that's how my brother QuadraJets's MiracleMac 6100 was before something suddenly made it start working. He'd tried a new PRAM battery, reseating the cards, and whatnot. But then when he hooked it up again almost a year later, it fired right up! Here's his post on the topic from a while back: topic.asp.TOPIC_ID=1753.html

6100 Power supplies are prone to faliure, you can open it up and check the fust, or find a new supply. Also make sure that the cable from the supply is connected to the motherboard.

oh, it's working all right and it's LOUD

even with the case on and closed ( I don't have a nuBus cover though)

and the HD spins up, and starts to read itself when scsi conneced to mobo... so the HD works, tomorrow I'll put it into the IIsi and see whats on it
